Is a British PIAT considered a AOW in CA?
Hello,
I may or may not have a British PIAT in California. A television reality show is asking me to come on the show with the alleged PIAT. Is this legal in California? I know Federally it is considered a C&R. Thank you in advance.

With it being a shoulder fired mortar, you need to contact the KOMIEFORIA powers that be on it [;)] 0 -
California Department of Justice, Firearms Bureau, is the outfit who would have the information your requesting.

Rather then seeking information on the net that might not be valid, I would contact them.
You also might contact Mark Christian who is one of our moderators. He is a Class 3 dealer located in CA, and might know.0 -
Probably OK if its a DEWAT and non-functioning. If it works, it may be considered a destructive device. As mentioned, contact Calif DOJ but keep in mind you could call them on two different days and get two different answers. If you get an opinion, ask for it in writing. 0 -
Under CA law a PIAT is considered to be a grenade launcher and is restricted. This applies to any launching device capable of launching a bomb, grenade, explosive missile or similar device. This does not apply to flares or to flare guns. Since it appears that you may or may not have a PIAT, I strongly suggest that you DO NOT have it in CA.
For the interest of our members: The PIAT was at one time considered to be a Destructive Device and subject to all of the controls of the National Firearms Act. Quite a few years ago the BATF ruled that due to it's collector status the PIAT would no longer be considered an NFA weapon and would no longer need to be registerd. Although it is no longer a Destructive Device under federal law it is still considered to DD in many states and in all cases it remains a firearm and must be treated as such even in states where possession is unrestricted.0 -

So you have an illegal weapon and you're not smart enough to keep your mouth shut about it? Well there's a winning combo....
You do realize that you could have simply asked "is a xxxxx legal to own in California" would have gotten you the same answer without tipping your hand, right?
And how does a tv show find out you have this felony waiting to happen?0 -
