anyone use a snake fluted 10/22 barrel??
I want to know if it is a good barrel??? I want to put one on my 10/22 for plinking and need a barrel that will cool fast.I usally shoot about 1000 round a weekend with it.

If fluting increases surface area of the barrel to aid in cooling, then it also increases surface area to absorb heat from the sun and surrounding temperature of your environment.
It looks cool. I own a fluted barrel (on one of my rem 700's, not my 10/22) I do not believe it cools any faster than my non fluted barrels.
A damp towel taken from a cooler full of ice water and wrung out then draped over the barrel would cool it faster I would think. But then you can't see the neat looking flutes...0 -
With a 10-22 barrel, you do not have to worry about stress relief too much. I have a couple of modified 10-22's, one heavily. Neither have fluted barrels. They will both shoot with well big name brand, high end bolt gun's, that compete in the RF sporter rifle competition.
That said, any increase in surface area, will act as a heat sink, to either sink heat out, or sink it in, depending on which side of the barrel is warmer...the inside, or outside. Being that most of the time, the outside is seeing only normal ambient temperatures, my bet is to sink it out, unless you have it coated in flat black, so it purposely soaks up the sun's rays.
As for the snake flutes...yes, theoretically they will cool faster, as they provide more surface area. However, given that this is just a 22LR, I don't believe the snake flutes will be a factor, over straight flutes, or even, perhaps a composite wrapped barrel.

If leaching heat out of the barrel is that much of a concern to you, Tactical Solutions makes several barrels in different anodized colors, that have a steel/stainless steel barrel liner, inside of an aluminum sleeve. Everyone knows that aluminum is a good conductor of heat. I believe to help increase the surface area, they have some of the sleeves fluted also.

The barrel I would go with is the Magnum Reasurch Carbon Fiber with muxxle breaks. It's no longer produced but will pop up here and there on occasion. 0 -
I have a butler creek carbon fiber barrel. it (at least the outside of it) stays cool to the touch even with rapid fire shooting.
It's not the most accurate, but it stays well below an inch at 50 yards.
Also, if you like the extra weight of the .920 barrel, then carbon fiber is not for you.0 -
I have one 1022 with a Shillen heavy bbl. and a Sporter that Chief AJ worked over the factory bbl. Putting the same amount of rounds through each, I see no difference in grouping with hot bbls.

Don't forget that the slight increase in surface area and decreased mass that helps fluted barrels cool faster ALSO means they heat up faster!
That should be true of helical fluted barrels too, though I must admit, they do LOOK cool.
Functionally, I really don't think fluting/not fluting, or type of fluting really makes a functional difference in terms of accuracy, especially with a .22LR, where you're simply not burning a lot of powder compared to centerfire rounds.
If you're shooting for accuracy (ie slowly, one round at a time), rather than ripping through magazines, the barrel is probably going to cool enough with a .22 fluted or not.
Incidentally, although most people know that black colored surfaces ABSORB more heat (ie from sunlight), what many don't realize is that they also RADIATE heat away faster for exactly the same thermodynamic reasons. So believe it or not (and contrary to "common sense"), a black barrel will actually cool faster than a similar bare metal one.
This same phenomenon is also why (again contrary to popular belief) wearing loose fitting BLACK clothes in hot weather is actually cooler than light ones. (And this is why Burkas, as one example, are black).
Lastly, FWIW, I have a black fluted Green Mountain bull barrel on my .22. Black, just because it matched the other hardware on the gun, and fluted, because it looks cool and why not? [;)]0 -
