Winchester 1906
First, I am new to this site and think itsgreat! Second, I am impressed by the knowledgeof most of the members. My question: my son owns a win. mod.1906 ser#171xx in .22 short only, that is in good condition, with the exception of the bore that is in poor shape. Can you tell me when it was made and approx. value? will having the barrel relined detract from its value? thanks in advance.

I have a Winchester model 1906. I tried to search the serial # and can not find anything. The web sight I found says that it is out of their database date range. The serial # is 771XXX. Does anyone have any info on this?
Thanks,
Jim0 -
My bet is that the receiver has been buffed, polished, and reblued. It absolutely should have both a serial number and a proof mark stamp on it. 0 -
Bert,
That is what my first thought was too but the bluing looks original and the lines and edges are sharp and crisp. I would guess that the serial numbers are about .006"-.008" deep so removing them would change the dimensions. When measuring other 1906's the dimensions are within one thousand or two. You're right that removal seems to be the only good explanation but I was wondering if through the parts dept would Winchester have sold a receiver without a number 60 or 70 years ago.0 -
Almost anything was possible with Winchester in the pre-WW II days, but I have doubts about them selling a non-proofed receiver frame.
Can you post clear close-up pictures of it?0 -
Thanks Bert, I'll work on posting some closeups tonight. 0 -
Is it a 2nd or a 3rd model style receiver? My first thought is that it was pieced together and has a 2nd model receiver lacking the serial number and proof mark.
I want pictures!0 -
The 1940 Stoeger Shooters Bible shows Winchester selling 1906 receivers bare or with various levels of parts added.
This is true of other rifles and shotguns listed.
Frames were also sold for pistols and revolvers but Stoegers required serial number with a handgun order.0
