1911 Colt Ace .22
I have a Colt Ace from the early 1930s. Very nice condition except for an extraction problem.
CCI Stingers work perfectly. Target ammo and even Winchester Hi-Speeds fail to extract reliably; usually two "fail to extract" per magazine load of 9. The brass stays in the chamber. What's the problem?

It common for certain .22 rimfire pistols to only work with high pressure, high speed ammo. I've had this problem many times, in the past. The actual projectile type seems to affect feeding and operation in my experience. Round nose 40 grain solids are the best functioning .22 cartridges for a problem pistol. The only thing you can try is cutting down the recoil spring on a trial and error basis. Don't do this unless you have a replacement recoil spring though.
Recently I had the same problem with a US made Browning Challenger II pistol. Cut down the recoil spring 1/2 inch and tweaked the mag lips to no avail. Finally got disgusted and just shot Remington Thunder Bolts, Mini Mag 40 grain solids and Korean made 40 grain Zappers through it.0 -

The spring follower has a stack of several leather spacers on it. I wonder if the purpose is to adjust the compression of the return spring.0 -

More likely it's a buffer mechanism to prevent the battering of the frame. Bunch of manufacturers make the same thing nowadays out of plastic. Recoil spring can be adjusted by varying length, number and diameter of coils etc.0 -
The old original Colt Ace had the leather buffers to cushion recoil.
Agree with rufe, I THINK they were needed to protect the the thin walled slide with its soft recoil spring made to operate with .22LR before the Service Model Ace and its floating chamber came along.
I wonder if your extractor has lost its tension or hook. The Stingers are blowing out, the ordinary stuff not.
I'd check the extractor first, then try some CCI Mini-Mags if it looks ok.0 -
Please DON'T try to Modify any part depending on condition you could have a pistol worth Thousands of dollars. These pistols are like any Blow Back operated 22 Long Rifle pistol . Correct function depends on the correct BALANCE between how much recoil impulse power the firing of the cartridge produces and how much the slide weigh and how strong the recoil spring is. The ACE has a number of leather washers Up to 8 the more washers you have on the spring guide the harder the recoil impulse must be to FULLY cycle the action. with no washers then a very lightly loaded cartridge will cycle the action. I would NEVER
SHOOT STINGERS in this pistol. You could crack or break parts that you can't replace. . IMHO do yourself a favor and put your gun on gunbroker for sale then you will have enough money to buy TWO or more new pistols designed for High Velocity .0 -

A friend asked me to list this gun on GB for him and I told him I'd have to fire it first to confirm proper operation. I advised him of the problem and he might just have me list it with full disclosure of it's faults.
It would be nice to own but my .22 shooting is done with Hi-Standards and S&Ws.0
