FN L1A1

On the FN FAL L1A1 rifle, what part of the rifle is concidered the receiver? I have been told by different people that the upper section is the receiver & others have said that the lower portion (like an AR-15) is the receiver. My upper section has a serial number and my lower has a different one. It was imported by Century Arms.

  In the united states the upper receiver on the FAL is considered to be the the regulated part of the weapon.

  Yup. Since that is the part that holds the magazine (at least, that is the justification I've read about on ar vs fal).
  
  In Canada, the registered part is the lower...

  Let's not get too hung up on just what part of the gun holds what accessory.
  
  In the Thompson machinegun line (both the semi, and full auto versions), I can, if I wish, purchase the lower receiver assembly W/O any paperwork save the du rigeur bill of sale the same as if I were buying a pair of shoes.
  
  The lower assembly on Thompson/Auto Ordnance guns holds the selector mechanism, as well as the magazine. In this case, the upper receiver constitutes the controlled/restricted item.
  
  Conclusion..don't go by past firearm rulings. Always seek the correct ruling for your particular firearm. Best, Joe

  FNCs were imported for years with only a number on the upper, even though they are essentially the same configuration as an AR15.
  
  The Bushmaster ACR has the serial number on the upper as well...
  
  Go figure.

  I did not know FN ever made an L1A1

  The "FN" part was my mistake. The one I have was a Canadian manufacture.
