Go to Walmart or any big sporting goods store and buy an inexpensive black plastic rifle case with the foam liner. You aren't going to get any better trying to ship it in some kind of cardboard box. [:)]

I concur with the suggestion to use the rigid plastic gun cases.

I recommend that all rifles be shipped in the shortest box possible with the stock removed, if possible.

The boxes that hold ten 4-foot fluorescent bulbs work well.

If you use regular cardboard boxes, use ALOT of bubble wrap. Pretend it will be thrown from an airplane. If you think you have wrapped it good enough, USE MORE!
I use 48X8X8 for long guns and 36X10X10 for take downs. Oh yeah, I use loads of bubble wrap. When I think I've used enough bubble wrap, Yep you guessed it. I USE MORE!
I use a lot of tape too.
