colt 1861 musket
How does one tell if a Colt Special Musket dated 1863 is real or a repro made in italy?

The Colt Blackpowder Firearms Co. repro has Sam Colt's signature on the trigger guard. An Italian copy would have Italian proofmarks on the barrel but I'm not aware of any Italian repro's of the 1861 Colt Special Model.

Most all replicas have the maker's name somewhere on the gun; mine for instance is stamped EUROARMS on the barrel.
Some skirmishers and reenactors grind these marks off and refinish to make it look more authentic. In that case, unless I had it in my hands I'd err on the side of 'if too good to be true...'0 -
Here's my original, unissued Colt musket. The replica markings aren't clear, hammer is different and the wood edges are smoother.
