Ruger 22/45what keeps the mainspring housuing from

swinging all the way out when I pull on it?
I've watched some of the tutorials but they don't address this particular issue. It only swings out about 1/4 of an inch. I turned the internal lock counterclockwise.

  Is it a 22/45 Mark II or a 22/45 Mark III ? It makes a difference in how they are taken apart.Is the pistol still cocked ? Did you remove the magazine ?

  Mark III. I read the manual for the Mark III. I think something is broken inside not allowing it to decock.
  I'm sending to Ruger this morning but I'd like to know how to do this. Thank You.

  In other words, you MUST put the mag in the gun in order to drop the hammer. Dont worry, it took me a while to figure this out as well. Put mag in, drop hammer, then remove mag. At this time the lever in the mainspring housing will be free to move properly. After the lever is down, the housing should swing up without issue, then the stop pin can come down, allowing the mainspring housing assembly to be removed completely from the gun.
  
  I re read your OP. The "lock" should not come into play while disassembling the gun. The safety must be off in order to get the hammer into the down position, therefore your problem is that you are leaving the safety on in order to "lock" the gun.
