Schofield & Trapdoor
I have recently obtained an original Schofield revolver, and a Springfield Trapdoor. Both have significant Rust or patina. Is there any process that could be used to enhance the appearance and value, as I plan to offer both on GB when time permits? Thanks, Chuck (513) 703-6572

patina is good [^]loose rust is bad[:(] Get a zip lock bag some Kroil. Chore Boy copper pot scrubbers and paper towels and Burlap bag . wrap pistol in paper towel then wet with kroil install in zip lock bag let set for 24-48 hours . scrub with pot scrubber then remove brass color with burlap and hoppe's bore cleaner. You will not remove Patina but pistol will look much better. NEVER USE STEEL WOOL . 0 -
I think I would skip the potscrubber the first time around and see what I could get off with oil and coarse cloth.
A Schofield is too valuable to take chances with.

With rare collectable guns like these I would tread lightly. Start with oil and a soft cotton rag. If you go too far it is impossible to go back. The pot scrubers can be good but if you are too agressive you can destroy the original patina. Oil by itself will not. 0 -
No abrasives. Let the buyer determine how far he wants to go. What may be a modest effort at restoration to some, may be seen as the destruction of originality, to others. 0 -
Chuck...thanks for your question. You are getting some good advice here as you (potentially) have some very valuable antiques and you should handle them with care. Perhaps you have seen Antiques Roadshow to know that with antiques "cleaning" them can destroy their value so the first thing is to do a bit of study on how to take care of antiques. Do some research and perhaps that is what you are doing by asking these questions. Perhaps the best thing you could do here is follow Spiders rec and submit some photos and let us look at what you have. 0 -

Yep. Saw a pretty nice antique revolver on Pawn Stars. Unfortunately, the rube had cleaned it with the wire wheel on his bench grinder. He got every bit of rust off alright, plus the patina, and most of the markings. It went from about a $1000 gun to a $10 gun. [:D] 0
