M1 Carbine FTF Advice Sought

I have a carbine that FTF in about 1 of 5 rounds. The primers aren't dented at all. The others fire just fine with well dented primers. What possible problems am I having with the gun and or the reloads?

    That could be caused by the the bolt failing to go into battery. I think that would be noticeable though.

    Do the reloads look like the bullet is crimped in place, it should not be. Try some factory ammo. Take the bolt apart, inspect and clean.

    EDIT1: Make sure that there is no crud in the bolt recess in the receiver. Check the bolt lug to be sure it is not damaged or welded. The firing pin should move freely in the bolt.

    I'll have to get some factory ammo and try it.

    I don't have a bolt disassembly tool but I'll remove the bolt soak it in some solvent blow it dry and have a look. Since the firing pin does dent primers on some rounds, at least the point on the pin is okay.

    While the carbine is apart, I can drop the reloads into the chamber to see if they go in easy & all the way. I don't recall trimming the brass so, I'll measure that too.

    You can disassemble and reassemble the bolt without the tool but I'd recommend it for the beginner so as not to lose flying extractor spring and follower.
    If the firing pin is free and protrudes when the rear is flush with the bolt it's ok.If not soak it in gasoline, work it free and reoil it.
    There's a bridge in the Carbine and Garand receivers that prevents the firing pin from going fully forward unless the bolt is fully turned in battery.
    If your cases are too long or if something in the chamber prevents cartridges to fully seat, they will not fire.

    It sounds like a general cleaning might be in order. Perhaps there's some fouling in the lug recesses or someplace else which keeps the bolt from returning to battery fully. Maybe it's time to clean out the gas piston or at least find a way to get some solvent in there. Has it been shot with lead bullets?

    I had the same problem with a carbine I had...the problem...the bolt was not completely closing.

    The reason the bolt is not closing is most likely the return spring is weak and it is hard to tell by looking that the bolt is not closed. There could be damage to the rails on the barrel that the slide runs in or damage to the slide it self. Some time the bolt will release the extractor, spring or plunger and create a problem with the bolt not being able to close.

    In addition to the inspection/cleaning suggested, I normally replace the recoil spring on the carbines.. The ones I have came from SARCO, years ago.. I see Wolff now has them, as well as a complete Service Pak..
