Cold bluing Remington 721 barrel
Hello All. Attempting to cold blue a Remington 721 barrel and the bluing does not want to take. Heated the barrel by boiling and still no luck . Were the barrels heat treated ? Any help other than Hot Bluing. Thanks

Cold blue is crap, usually producing uneven blotchy patches of thin blue. Call the people at brownell's, they will mostly have the best crapy cold blue. Make sure you degrease the bbl first.

I'm not much of a fan of spray painting guns, but I think I'd do that before resorting to cold blue. I've been fiddling with the stuff for about 40 years and never found anything good enough to do more than edge or scratch touch up. Some of the stuff like Oxpho or 44-40 is very good at that, but it just doesn't do well on large surfaces. 0 -
Is that barrel perhaps stainless steel? If it is, cold bluing and even hot salts bluing won't take. If the barrel has been polished bright, it's going to have to go back to Remington for rebluing. 0 -

Have t check to see if it is Stainless never thought that Remington made stainless barrels for the 721.
Tried the 44-40 no luck with it. Will have to call Brownell in the morning Thanks guys0 -

You are welcome. I had the same problem thirty years ago. Polished up a customers barrel and it came out looking like a mirror. Put it in the hot bluing tank for 1/2 hour, it came out still shiney. Put it back for an hour, still bright. Read the markings on the barrel and there it was plain as the idiot grin on my face, STAINLESS STEEL. 0
