AR-15 mag catch not holding mags

On my recent trip to go shooting, I had a new malfunction pop up on my AR-15. When I load a magazine, after firing 1-2 rounds it just plain falls out of the rifle. I tried tightening the mag catch, but it didnt help. It did it for all of my magazines, and the magazines are not worn out. It made no difference if I slammed the mag in, or rocked it. It always had a positive lock. I had to hold the mags in to be able to shoot.
Any ideas?

Take the mag catch out and inspect it, perhaps it is broken, worn, bent or not fully seating because of dirt/crud or a bad spring. Might make sure the mag well is free of crap too, but suspect it would not feed if the mag were not at the fully seated position. 0 -
It only takes a minute to remove the mag catch for inspection. I'd go that way first and replace it if it looks worn or rounded on the top edge. If this just started out of the blue, I'd look for foreign material as the likely cause. Give the recess a good flushing while the catch is out for inspection.
You haven't by chance been using doubled mags, a drum, or some other feed device that is heavier than standard?0 -
Agreed that your first step should be a complete disassembly, cleaning and inspection of the mag catch assembly. Before attempting to diagnose any possible parts issue you need to insure they're able to function as designed, with no outside influences.
A couple of questions...
Does this occur within the first couple of rounds of only fully loaded mags or even if the mag only contains 5-6 rounds?
Does this only occur if you insert a magazine with the bolt in the forward position or does it also happen if inserted with the bolt locked to the rear, then chambering by hitting the bolt release?
Also - out of curiousity - what brand of rifle and what sort of mileage does it have on it?0 -

Its one of them CA legal DPMS A-15 lowers with a Bushmaster HBAR carbine upper. It is well used.0 -
Oh yeah an I forgot to mention, this malfunction happened on the first round fired out of the rifle that day. I was trying to introduce some of my friends to the AR-15 platform. I can tell you they laughed their kesters off when that magazine fell out. Then they laughed more every time I yelled "I FIXED IT" and then BANG-plop. Man that was embarrassing. 0 -

You're using the "Bullet Button" correct?
One of my peeves on the BB is its rather weak spring. It's not nearly as strong as the conventional mag release spring. I'd sock down the BB nut as tight as it will go, that should help. If not, try a different mag release lever - they're about $3.00.
To save everyone in the normal states a search, a "Bullet Button" is a CA specific type of magazine release required by law on pistol gripped AR 15s. Evidently, according to the CA legislature, them thar AR 15 guns is waaaaay dangerous and the BB makes them not so dangerous. [;)]0
