pre-64 model 70 30-06 value

made in 1949, not refinished and metal looks as new, original Lyman scope it was bought with still on it, barrel marked 30govt06; not sure about the butt pad,it looks too new, rough idea of worth, not sure because of the butt pad

  just recently bought same year,same caliber,model 70 with original buttplate,no scope. $785.00

  All of the standard grade Original M70s in 30-06 made in 1949 had neither recoil pads or sling swivels.

  The 30govt06 is what makes it valuable.I had a friend (Federal Game Warden) that owned one.

  Cut stock with pad will devalue it heavily. What kind of bases, top mount or side.

  There where 208,218 pre 64 model 70s made in 30-06, they are byfar the most common caliber produced. Originallity is the key to Winchester collecting, the recoil pad is a big deduction.
  That said, what is the LOP? If the stock wasn't cut, buy an original butt plate, install it and your in business.

  We would need several more, closer up and clearer pictures(use the MACRO function on your camera), to be posative about the value. Was the reciever drilled and tapped at the factory?
  
  Unfortunately, unless that was a special order rifle, that stock has been cut, for the recoil pad. With the recoil pad, sling swivels, and the D&T issue, it could be worth @$750.00 as a shooter, or $1500.00 as a collector...all depends on originality.

  Standard rifles had non-detachable sling swivels. That is not a devaluation. If it has a pad, the stock was cut. The standard steel butt plate (before 1959) had a "beak" that protruded at the top and was inlet into the top of the butt stock.If a pad is added without cutting the stock, this would be visible and unusual. If it was made in 1949, it is factory drilled, even if it is a transition variation. The original rear sight and front sight hood would be a plus. Recoil pads were an option, but they were solid rubber until 1959, when they switched to the webbed type.This one does not look like a Winchester pad. That is a devaluation. I think between $800 and 1,000 is a probable range.
