Stevens Favorite 25 20
I recently acquired a Stevens Favorite marked 25 20. It will not chamber the standard 25-20 WCF, so I assume this is for the 25-20 Single Shot cartridge. I have not done a chamber cast to verify. Several questions: Can this be safely re-chambered for the 25-20 WCF? Is the receiver capable of handling the added pressure of the WCF catridge? Which Stevens Model would this be? Barrel is 26", octagon up to the end of the forearm, then round, tapering to .8" at muzzle. It has a metal crescent buttplate. Thanks for your help!

Hello I really think with a half OCT. barrel half Round it would be a BIG mistake to rechamber to 25-20 WRF the 2520 WRF is not an easy factory cartridge to locate and is PRICEY [:(] You can buy 25-20 single shot ammo and dies to reload. A rechamber will be costly you will have to modify the extractor as well, as the rim diameter is not the same. You would also RUIN the value of your rifle. Are you sure your rifle is a favorite and not a MODEL 44 or Model 44&1/2. [?] 0 -
Never saw a Favorite with a metal crescent buttplate, and as perry shooter suggests, it's likely a Model 44, a Favorite look-alike but larger, heavier, and stronger.
So many Model 44's and 44-1/2's have been rebarreled or relined to some modern caliber, it would be a shame to ruin the collector value by modifying yours.
Flayderman lists minimum value of a centerfire Model 44 in VG condition of $450, or $750 if it's the "highwall" 44-1/2 Model.0 -
A .25-20 Winchester reamer would not "clean up" a .25-20 Single Shot chamber. There would be about .30" of old SS neck diameter ahead of the WCF mouth, which would pretty much ruin accuracy.

The only way to correctly re-chamber from 25-20 S.S. to the 25-20 W..CF. (Repeater) cartridge would be to set the barrel back approximately 1-inch, then re-cut a new chamber and extractor slot. 0 -

Just want to confirm that it is probably a 44. Could also be a 44 1-2. Favorites were never made in a ceterfire. Rechambering to.25-20 winchester is not an option. As has been stated, brass is available. I would stick with low end loads in the 44 action. It is a pleasant, fun load to shoot and a fairly accurate one. 0
