Glenfield/Marlin Mod 60

I have this new Model 60 which has stopped ejecting either spent or unfired cartridges. I have checked the ejectors and firing pin and they all look to be in good shape. The firing pin also appears to be correct length. I am stumped.
Any help or suggestions will be appreciated.

    Bear with me here, as I've seen many confuse failure to extract for failure to eject.

    Is it in fact extracting the fire case/cartridge from the chamber?

    If extraction is good it could be the point on the extractor is worn/damaged and isn't holding the case rim securely enough for solid ejection.
    You may also have an issue with the cartridge lifter where the following cartridge is dislodging the case from the extractor before it contacts the ejector.

    On the off chance of a failure to extract:
    Again, the tipof the extractor may be worn or simply crud built up in the extractor groove of the bolt. Also, the mouth of the chamber may have been peened by the firing pin.
    Check for a bit of upset metal at the mouth of the chamber.

    Has been a long time since I have seen one. We boys would wear one out every year and take it back to K-Mart and get a new one. Usually the problem was feeding. I never thought they were quality rifles but I have made some fantastic shots with several of them.

    So is the brass staying in the chamber? Perhaps feeding right back in? Part list show two different styles. Check the springs for crap and the working surfaces on the extractors #14-19. http://www.gunpartscorp.com/catalog/Products.aspx?catid=11759

    If you used WD40 on the bolt you may have varnish in the extractor plunger. Use carb cleaner and hose the bolt face and extractor plunger out, if dirty the extractor slot can also fill up with gunk and hold the extractor away from the rim. Use a toothbrush to help scrub the gunk away.

    OK, the Marlin 60, has been around for ages, and is just as robust as the Ruger 10-22, even though it loads differently.

    As has been stated, you want to carefully inspect it to make sure that it is EXTRACTING ok, as extraction, and ejection are two different things. Ejection depends on extraction actually.

    Before you do this, if you havent already, take it out of the stock, get out the cleaning stuff, rod, loop, jag, and bore brush, along with a brass, and nylon hand(looks like a tooth brush), and plenty of solvent and oil. Make sure this thing is clean. A 22LR is one of the most fouling, dirty, nasty cartridges there has ever been. It leaves leading, lubricant, and powder fouling, like no other. Since the 22LR, is still our most affordable, and fun cartridge, I am sure they get used more than most. Make sure you scrub the bolt face, and the extractor grooves well, the inside of the reciever, the trigger group, EVERYTHING! Then put it back together, and see if your problem still exists.

    All in all, that is one of the most typical causes of malfunctions in a 22 semi auto, is the lack of cleaning.

    My point is, that, if maintained, and cleaned, the Model 60, will run just as good as the Ruger 10-22. Yes, I have also had my 10-22's get gummed up with cheap ammo, and stop running. They are not infallable. The ONLY best the Ruger has over the Marlin, would be the magazine, being detachable. Like it or not, the Marlin 60, has been just as much a staple, in bring new shooter's(and more experienced ones) to the fold, as the Ruger 10-22.

    On a rabbit hunting trip many years ago with my FIL, he threw his model 60 off a cliff, then we went back into town and he bought a Ruger 10-22.

    I don't mean to belittle anyones toys, (One mans meat is another mans poison, and all of that) but I really don't see how anyone who has ever worked on both rifles could conclude anything other than the clear superiority of the Ruger design. Limited experience; 3 or 4 60's and perhaps a dozen Rugers. Won't even bother looking at the Marlins any more. A lot of folks swear by them. Can't be all bad, but not for me.[:D][:D]
