kumatelives,
Actions only for any brand can be difficult but most especially for the Pre-'64 Winchesters. The key is to be tenacious in your searching of Gunbroker Auctions and the websites which feature parts for sale. Create a list in your 'Favorites' so you don't have to search for the sites every time.
The first place to take a hard at is Gunbroker Auctions, obviously. Many times though, trying to find just actions listings can be a little daunting. You need to try various combinations of words in order to dig out the listings that sellers use for their actions.
Next would be to find a well used Pre-'64 rifle in either .30-06 or .270 win. since these were the largest production runs and more common than the other chambers, therefore a little less expensive. I've found them for as little as $495.00 through various sources. These have been rough in appearance but I was re-purposing the action anyway.
The principle action to consider is the Winchester Classic as an alternative. I can also recommend using other name actions such as the Dakota, CZ or even the less expensive Montana Rifleman M1999. These are all claw extractor actions (clones if you will) very similar to the Winchester.
If however you are stuck firmly on the Pre-'64, all I can say is good luck and good hunting for an action. They're out there but you have to find them. Be patient and do the searches frequently.
