Colt Ser 80 Commander - No Ser 80 Safety Features
I have heard that Colt turned out some Series 80 1911s that didn't have the updated Series 80 safety features. Is that True? I've also heard that between the time the series 70 style 1911 were being replace as the standard production 1911 model by the new series 80s with the new safety system there were some pistols produced that are now called "transition guns".
The info I have heard is that as the series 70 style 1911 were being phased out of standard production, Colt continued making series 70 frames and slides but began stamping them as series 80s as the transition to the new series 80 safety system was being introduced. Did they actually do this? If so, was it to cleaning up old parts but were stamping the receivers and slides as Series 80 1911s prior to being able get parts to incorporating the new safety system to the slides and receivers for the new series 80 model?
The pistol that I know about from personal observation is a commander 1911 that has a correct serial 80 serial # on the receiver, and it also is stamped on the slide as a series 80 slide, however it does not have the safety plunger hole for the firing pin plunger or plunger spring in the slide and NEITHER does it have the cut out area in the receiver for the firing pin plunger lever and trigger bar lever internal safety parts.
I find it hard to believe that this is a counterfeit or even that someone would go to the trouble (even if possible - which it may be) to create such an item.
I don't claim to be an expert by any stretch of the imagination, but the pistol seems to a legitimate factory build not a "pieces parts" build up.
Just looking for some expert information from those who really know.

Series 80 ROLL STAMPED SLIDES as well as Serial number format May be more of a date thing . I have seen a number of NON GOVERNMENT models that DID NOT HAVE the 80 style hammer sear or other so called series 80 parts. 0 -
Colt is not known for consistency.
They used whatever parts available.
