Are all M1 Carbine stocks interchangeable?
If not, how would I know what a stock fits if I don't have the receiver that came out of it?

There are two or three types of USGI carbine stocks but they will fit any GI rifle. Some after market stocks are different and will not fit the GI rifle while there are others that will interchange.

Yes, any GI stock will fit any GI carbine. GI stocks were made in the M1 and M2 designs. The M2 being for the selectfire M2 carbine. Either stock will fit any GI Carbine. The only trouble you might have is using a Universal or other Non-GI stock. 0 -
At least one difference in GI and Universal is the trigger housing area. While puting a GI trigger housing on a Universal works there is a big gap down each side. So a GI stock will not work on a Universal, providing there are no other differnces a Universal stock may fit a GI gun but it won't be pretty. 0 -
An M-2 assembled action wont go into an M-1 stock.
There is extra inletting in the M-2 stock to provide space for the selector to function.
The later "Potbelly" stocks replaced early standard stocks that often cracked in service in the forend area. I believe all replacement potbellied stocks were cut for M-2.
I don't recall if there were M-2 stocks in the narrow forend style.
The carbine in the other post clearly showed grinding in the maker & S/N area. The old safety, sights and lack of bayo stud indicate it was stolen early in carbine history.0
