Barnes Varmint Grenade and coyotes........
Asking if any of you guys have used Barnes Varmint Grenades in 6mm/.243 on coyotes. I have not used then yet as I am getting mixed feedback from a friend of mine who says, he hears, they don't work.
I know for a fact, the .224 Varmint Grenades make prairie dogs come unglued right quick,out to 300ish yards, out of my .223 Remington. My friend says that the 6mm/.243 Grenades are not good stoppers / killers. This time of the year, I am not worried about pelts, these are just for killing the 'yotes that are bothering the livestock on neighboring farms around me. Dropped 2, a week ago last Friday night, 100 and 150 yards, with Hornady 60 grain soft points out of a .223 Remington. DRT, with 50 cent plus sized exit holes in both. (My first double on 'yotes) Not the load if you want pelts....... I want to try the Grenades, as I want the bullet to break up if there is a miss, yeah, I have missed, once or twice..... I worry about ricochets in this kind of semi-settled area. I always try and pick a good back stop, but.......

I have had mixed success with the Varmint Grenades in my 223 Rem. My conplains with them are two, they are not very ballistically efficient so they shed velocity faster than the government can waste money! And beyond 150 yds maybe 200 yds they don't kill well, they just zip through with little or no expantion. If you don't have to use lead free, DON'T! My favorite bullets in 22 cal are the 50 or 55 gr Speer SX and the Hornady 40 gr v-max, they really disintegrate. 0 -
The 6mm size is likely to perform differently than the .22 size. As you aren't interested in pelts, give them a try. Wounded or dead, a given coyote won't be back to bother those cattle again, and your ricochet risk will be minimized. 0 -
The V-Max Hornadys are my choice in .223 and 6mm, but I'm in an area where lead is still legal and I don't hunt for pelts. 0
