Owners of both the G3 and FAL?
Would like to hear from actual owners of both the G3 and FAL and which is preferred and why...Have handled both and personally prefer the G3 as a MBR/DMR over the FAL right off which in my opinion was large and clunky unlike the G3 that was both ergonomic and sleek...Apparently the G3 is easy to take down and clean if needed, magazines and parts are prevalent and inexpensive and the rifle is reportedly very reliable and quite accurate. Didn't include the M1A as I have no interest in it and have never cared for it although it seems like a fine rifle for what it is and all and is just my preference...
Thanks

Never owned a G3 but have shot several a lot - both Real HK and PTR. The G3 has more recoil, is rougher on the brass, doesn't have a last shot hold open.
I think they are both great rifles - I just prefer the FAL.0 -
I've had both of them and got rid of the H&K. No last shot hold open, it was awkward to me and the rear sight sucks. Kept the StG 58 I built myself. 0 -
ive owned a few of each. the fal wins hands down. more reliable, adjustable gas system, better sights, way easier to clean and maintain. the mags are way more robust. can cock the gun without having to take off shoulder.
a little bigger, perhaps, but you can always get the para trooper model.0 -
Accuracy (quite variable being dependent on the quality of kits and new barrels)

Mag availability and cost (this changes, as 10 years ago, FALs...metric were easier and cheaper, now the G3 is being phased out around the world and things have changed, the AWB's mag limits didn't help either.

Ease of construction, customizing. (Varies from swapping stocks to putting on shorter bbls etc...i.e. it's far easier to swap bbls on an FAL or M1A than a G3...but going from a fixed to coll. stock far easier on a G3 type)

I've only been doing this for 14 years, so compared to your average Internet Know It All (IKIA) my knowledge base of actually DOING may come up short against those who do a lot of READING on the Interwebs.0 -
3 differnt G3 types and 4 fals...now only 4 fals and no G3's prefer fals 0 -
Good information that I will consider...
The FAL that I handled was a UK version and I didn't like it however I do like the Austrian STG58 and reminds me of the G3 somewhat.
The G3 does have an awful rear sight, is there a peep sight that could be used alternatively?
Also is there a low mounted see through scope rail that allows for use of the iron sights?
Apparently the only way to resolve this is to just get both the G3 and STG58, certainly both have attributes that I like.
And yes, unfortunately there are those fixated 'internet expert know-it-all trolls' looking to cause nothing but trouble on the forums; who are narcissisticly delusional having an inferiority complex and are intimidated by others. And this is probably why they feel the schizophrenic need to continually and erroneously attempt to discredit others statements by being rude, condescending and argumentative, best just to avoid and ignore them as poop.0 -
The pistol grip ergonomics are different between the inch pattern (L1A1/SLR) and metric (G1/Belgian/Imbel/STG58/etc) - and like you, I prefer the metric.

Okay, that makes alot of sense like that and afaik it was designed as a metric weapon and should remain that way imho...The problem apparently was from british involvement which figures.

The big differences between inch and metric:
1) Pistol grip ergonomics, and how the PG actually attaches
2) Safety/selector - some prefer the longer inch style. Also, most inch pattern guns were designed as semi-auto only and have a long tab on the "other end" that hits the receiver to block it from the 3rd position, whereas most metrics were designed with full auto in mind. You can get semi-only metric selectors, or you can block a metric selector so that the FA position becomes another safety.
3) Magazine cuts. The inch has a square block on the front of the mag, the metric a small dimple pushed out from the mag body. Inch guns can use metric mags for the most part - they may be a little wobbly, but they can work. Not so for metric cut guns using inch mags. The Brits did this for mag compatibility with their light machine gun (Bren aka L4A1).
4) Inch doesn't have a last shot hold open. Can be added by using a metric BHO. This also affects how you adjust the gas
5) Charging handle - metric has the "beer keg" style knob, inch has a folding handle. Some metrics (like para models) will have a folding style, and there are a few small time makers who make a folding style metric charging handle.
6) Bolt carrier and receiver have sand cuts on the inch pattern.
There are a few other differences, but not for normal use/operation. Note that a LOT of the Century built inch pattern guns actually have a metric mag cut receiver or even a full-on metric receiver (Imbel with or without the gear logo). And when you start talking about the Israeli FALs, you get some mixes of both - mostly metric, but have sand cut receivers/bolt carriers, etc.
And as always, a TON more info on falfiles.com

Okay, thanks for the information.

I shot a G3 type several times, and had an FAL type for a while. I liked both equally. 0
