Ruger Mini 14 in .222?
Saw one at gunshow at the Machinist's Hall in St. Louis today. Stainless steel, supposedly never fired. Was not aware the .222 would work in a semi auto. Thought that was the reason the .223 was developed. Either my memory is failing or this is one rare gun. Anyone else ever seen one?

I have seen Mini's in .222 caliber, even fired one. Why anyone would want to buy one I dont know, the ammo is rather hard to find. Yes they are somewhat rare but not very collectible IMO. 0 -
IIRC, the Mini-14 in .222 was mfg'ed for countries that have a prohibition against citizens owning firearms chambered in military calibers. 0 -
Makes some sense. The ammo is not hard to find. Just not as common and cheap as .223. The .222 was the most accurate cartridge in it's class back in the day. Still good 200 - 250 yard varmit cartridge. 0 -
Saw a blued one many years ago. Story I was told about it, is that it was made for sale in countries that prohibited the sale of firearms chambered for military cartridges. Don't have a clue if that is true or not?
As far as operation in a gas actuated rifle, it appears at most the bleed hole in the barrel would have to be a larger diameter, and the mag would have to have a internal block for the shorter overall cartridge length?0 -

Colt also made AR,s in 222 for the same reason. All were ment for overseas sale, but some sold here as contract over-runs.0 -

WRONG, 222 is only .060 shorter than a 223. Same mags are used. The 222 AR I had, the mag would take 223 ammo.0 -

No, the AR-15 was not first chambered in 222 Remington. It was chambered in 222 Remington Magnum, as an experimental round, then the result was the 223 Remington, after final specifications were set.

Did the first guns have different magazines and magazine wells, then?
The .222 Remington Magnum is too long for a .223 magazine.
I know there was one-way interchangeability with the .224 Winchester; but I don't remember if the .223 would chamber in the .224 or vice versa.0
