Optimum bolt action for 250 Sav?
I'm considering getting a turnbolt in 250 Savage- my favorite barrelmaker passed away a few years back, so rather than getting a small Sako, Mini-Mauser or Rem 7 rebarrelled, I'm looking into getting a Savage M14 which comes in 250 Sav. Anyone have any experience with them- they appear to be only cosmetically different from the 110 line?

They are only cosmetically different from the 110, and the fact the 14 is a short action. Three digit=long action, two digit=short action.
My experience with them is that they are every bit as accurate as their target/varmint counterparts. At least the ones I've shot in .308, 30-06 and .250 Savage. I had my eye on the .308 and .250 but they got bought from underneath me.[;)] Anyhow, both got bought by guys on my range and they were kind enough to allow me to shoot them.
Personally, I think it's a great buy. Just one I didn't have the money, and enough reason at the time, to buy it myself.0 -
I have a model 14 in .250 Savage. I like it but I haven't found a load yet that it likes any better than factory loads. It shoots 100 gr Silver Tips quite well. I also have a Remington Classic and it shoots most anything well. You might want to consider the Remington. Even though they were made in the 80's, you might still be able to find one.

I had a Ruger77 chambered for 250 savage which may be another option for you 0 -
About the ultimate 250 Savage rifle, under $2K, would be Cooper model 22, or 54. Check it out.

They are a semi-custom, and they are very good shooter's, and very pleasant on the eye. These are definately not your ordinary rifles, and well worth the price.

As a side note, the Gunshop near me, has a very nice Savage 99 takedown in this chambering, on the rack.

My choice would be a Savage 99 lever gun, the one for which the .250-3000 was made. Just sayin'. 0 -

I have a Mauser civilian standard action, with a Shilen 26" barrel and a Mashburn trigger, chambered in 250-3000. The stock is lamanted, built by the guy who built the rifle, in the 60s.
When I got the rifle, it had a Leupold Pioneer 8X scope with Bueller Mounts, I have since replaced it with a 6-24 with Leupold mounts. This rifle is a tack driver with 100 gr Nosler Balistic tips and 32gr of H4895.
I've owned severail Savage model 99s in this caliber, thay have all shot reasonably well for what they designed for, but a good bolt action is what you want for sub 1" groups.
If I where buying a off the rack factory rifle in this caliber, with an eye for accuracy for the dollar spent, I'd look very hard at the Savage bolt guns.

Your Mauser sounds very much like a 257AI on an FN action that CP Donnelly built for me about 30 years ago. I'm not looking for an "ultimate" rifle, since I consider that I'm already the custodian of such. I agree that the present production Savages are very competitive, particularly when purchased through the Hunter Education Instructor program. As noted, I'm focusing in on the M14 Classic American, and it's nice to know that the 2 digit model number indicates the short action, which is the one that I would want in the 250. I'm presently involved in buying some guns in an estate sale, so the 250 is on hold, at least until the finances obtain a little dust. By the way, was that Pioneer scope 7/8"? If so, would it be available?0 -

I sold the Pioneer on the auction side last year, sorry about that.
I'm a Hunters Safety instructor, and have used the Savage discount a couple of times, great program. Two years ago I bought a model 14 Clasic in 270 Win and donated it to the local American Legion for a raffel, it was a realy nice rifle.
