Most of the published number's, for Winchester's, are significantly off from the real number's, on serial Vs. year of manufacture. Some by as much as 5 years. There has been new research being done, from the original polishing room ledger's, and some new referrence material is in the makings.
I am sure as soon as Bert H. sees this, he will be sure to give you the most up to date information available. He is the resident Winchester expert, and one of the very best, to ever meet.

If I am not mistaken, All of the WINCHESTER factory rectory records, up to 1980, no longer reside at the Winchester factory. Therefore, most of the stuff, the original WINCHESTER made, the NEW WINCHESTER, does not have a clue of what it was, other than what they are told, elsewhere. Yes, they have to research it elsewhere too, as all of the records are in the Cody Museum.
A lot of the works of George Madis, are very misrepresentative, along the DOM/Serial# lines. Those works are what most of the books, like The Blue Book's information were based on.
The most credible source of OLD Winchester information, is NOT the factory. It is from Cody, and one of our own forum member's.

You may copy, delete and repost as much as you want, but the facts are the facts. The records for those years, do not reside at the factory. From 1980 untill 2006 the Winchester guns, though being built in the old Winchester plant, were not built by Winchester. Here is some reading material for you

Perhaps you could post some pictures of your Winchester 1906, what condition is it in, do you shoot it, as for myself I have found that alot of the old .22 firearms can be incredibly accurate tack drivers? And just so you know the manufacturer would be the most credible source rather and the information provided is from the manufacturer as stated.

In regards to "Winchester", there has not been a "Winchester" firearms company or factory since January of 1981 (when they sold out the U.S. Repeating Arms Company). Currently, the Browning Arms Co. (a subsiderary of F.N.) has a "Winchester" division, which leases the trademarked "Winchester" name for the Olin corporation.
In regards to who has the historical factory records for the pre-1964 Winchester models, for the most part, they are in the sole possession of the Buffalo Bill Historial Museum (and can be accessed through the Cody Firearms Museum research office). There are some limited number of records (Polishing Room serialization records, drawings, blue prints, etc.) that are in private hands/ownership.0
