I don't know alot about S&W, but if that is a .38 SPL then I would say its a Model 10. Probably cut and frame heavily polished before nickel plating.

Answer to question:It's old; from the hand-ejector line. Has it been cut? Absolutely.

Maybe Military & Police. A photo of the bottom of the grip frame would help pin it down.

For sure a Hand Ejector Military & Police.
I can't read the barrel legend - what is left of it after the barrel was sawn off - to tell the caliber. Most likely .38 Special, might be .32-20 or .38 S&W.

In addition to the barrel having been cut off by somebody without the capability or interest in remounting the front sight, it has been heavily buffed and aftermarket plated with nickel or chrome. It was well used before all that, from the heavy wear on the grips.
Or maybe the checkering was sanded off on purpose.

    Resale value is very low.

S & W serial numbered many of their older M & P revolvers in multiple places beside the location on the butt. Check in the following 3 places.

Underside of barrel, underneath the ejector rod.

Inner face of the extractor star.

    Rear face of cylinder.

Interesting to see if the numbers are still there and they correspond with the number on the butt?

That is one to hang in a shadow box along with a set of 1940's era handcuffs, badge and keys. The gun as a collector has zero value, and even as a shooter is lousy without a front sight.
<sigh> another piece of American firearms craftsmanship ruined by Bubba.

Serial numbers are the same under the barrel and on the rear of the cylinder. Thanks for the responses.
