What should it cost?
Working on a project. I will need to removel the barrel (scrap) from SMLE #4. Two reliable gunsmiths in town and a lot of machine shops. What is a 'reasonable cost' (per instrutions) to removel a barrel? If just blocks and a wrench? If a lathe needs to removel shoulder? I have the action stripped and the stripped bolt (firing pin hole) for a guide. Any estimates?

I'd remove it for around $40. I'd use a barrel vise, oak blocks with resin and an action wrench. 0 -
Take it to a smith. Many ways to mess up an action if they do not know what they are doing. Plus a machine shop may not want the liability of working on a gun. If they did they would be a gunsmith. 0 -

Thanks. I was looking for a ballpark figure to budget in the conversion. I'd trust a 'smith on such work;they deal with these challenges every day. 0 -
My smith will spin a barrel off for free if he isn't busy... but then I have an action wrench and vice so it isn't an issue for me. Usually I take the gun apart myself, screw the new barrel on, and let him headspace and final ream it.
However, just to take the barrel off takes (assuming he doesn't have to do a relief cut) about 30 seconds and will fall in a minimum shop charge if he has one. Question is, what do you want done AFTER the barrel is off?0
