Gunsmith back log?
On Jan 6, I took a rifle to a local gunsmith for repair. He indicated 1 month till he could get to it. It has now been 6 months. Would you wait any longer?

Did it have a live round jammed anywhere in it?
Was the original problem something to do with it firing?
Is it an antique or other hard-to-find-parts-for foreign gun?
Is it a project gun you worked on first?
Other than the aforementioned situations, I can only think of 4 or 5 more reasons your 'Smith might be avoiding the work.
Is your 'Smith well-known and in high demand?0 -
Depends on how good the gunsmith is, as I have waited at least that long on gunsmiths that were just in high demand and well renowned because of their skills, however when I received the firearm back it was stunning and worth every penny and minute.
Talk to him politely and inquire as to when he might be looking at getting the work done, however what you don't want is for him to do a rush job or be upset about it as that wont help anyone.
It may just be that he has to locate some difficult to find parts or maybe he had to send out a part for work by a specialist that he may not do, you wont know until you ask though.
If its not the case though and you find that the guy is lazy and doesn't do a very good job or something then just ask politely for the firearm back, check it over closely away from him and don't ever use him again.0 -
I have a relatively close gunsmith, (1.5 hrs round trip )that I take my firearms to for stuff lihe missing buttplate, fitting replacement stock screws, wrist repair of FN49, etc.
IMHO, he is very good, inexpensive for his quality of work, uses good judgement, and always says "I hope you do not need this in a hurry".
I say no, but he has always underpromised and overdelivered.

I'll second what gunnut said.
There could be a number of reasons why he's backed up.
One thing I'll add, some gunsmiths are extremely efficient with their time. I have one that I use in Bloomington, MN that turns work around usually three to five days ahead of when he says. And, he usually quotes me short turn-around times. I used another guy that took one year to get a rifle re-barrelled/chambered and cerakoted. He told me it was the Cerakote that took the time, but I'm pretty sure it was him not being very efficient with his time and getting backed up. I used him once. I have found no reason to go back when I have a guy that will do it in 1/20th of the time. The rifle that took so long to get done does shoot very well. But, the quick turn rifles from my Bloomington gunsmith are the best shooting rifles I own.0 -
Have you asked him what the delay is, after all he's the one that stated 1 month ? If his reason is flimsey then I'd pick it up, I bet he'd complained if a garage kept his car well past promised date with no valid reason. Communicate with him, thats the key ! 0 -
+1 for asking what going on. If it needs parts maybe he got to it but hasn't found them yet.

Gun is Winchester 1890 .22 short. I took it to him last year as a working gun in need of barrel reline. Got back a non-functioning gun (wouldn't feed)and the entire mag tube assembly came off when I tried to shoot it.
When I took it back, I only asked that he make it function as it should, for which I will pay again. And did not complain about what I do feel should have been done the 1st time.
He has promised me several times that my gun was "next".0 -

Sounds like he messed up your gun and doesn't know how to fix it, and is hoping you will just go away. Gunsmith did that to one of my guns 10 years ago, I had to take him to court, where I got my money back and enough money to buy a new gun and he had to pay court costs.0 -
Sorry to say your first mistake, which wasn't really your fault, was to take your rifle to an apparently incompetent gunsmith. Your second mistake, which IS on you, was to take the rifle back for more incompetent gunsmithing. 0 -
Funny, but years back, I too took a Winchester 1892 that had been converted to 218 bee and wouldn't fuction right. I had some extra parts And even had to locate some parts for them that they thought it needed. Long story short, much time went on and they never could fix it. Caught wind that they were folding and just barely got my rifle back, short lost parts, money, and lots of excuses. Rifle still sits as is and I never tried to get it fixed again. I WOULD GET YOUR RIFLE AND FIND ANOTHER GUNSMITH. 0
