Red Dot Sight
Who makes a good quality Red Dot Sight for a Handi rifle? What is the difference in dot sizes? Need a good reasonably priced one to hunt deer at short range. Thanks

For the first time I looked through a red dot type sight. How does that work. I mean it seems like being able to hit your objective with only the rear sight and no front sight. 0 -
The dot is like cross hairs in a scope. There just is no magnification to most dot sights. They are best used with both eyes open. 0 -

they will make a bullseye shooter out of anyone right off the bat.My wife and grand son are proof of that.lining up 3 things before pulling the trigger just was not working for the young grandson,put on a red dot and LOOK OUT.
the more you pay,the more durable ,etc the product. my 40.00 ones suit me fine,but for heavy duty use,like lots of shooting matches ,etc,...well,the more u pay the more u get,lol.0 -

I think what screws up my head is that it is just like looking through a piece of glass where a scope has some length to it.0 -

I think I'm hooked but the one I looked through today cost upwards of $500.00 and I ain't going there.0 -
The red dot is sort of like a scope but better in two ways . It always has a full field of VIEW and no Parallax. It is great for hunting and has been a gift for us old gezsers in shooting Bulls Eye pistols 0 -

If a standard red dot feels screwy, wait until you try an EoTech.
Rather than being fixed in the center of the scope that dot is able to bounce all over the field of view - but your point of impact is wherever that dot happens to be. No need to bring it to center.
It actually works pretty damn well. Very fast.0 -
A few comments.
-Durable, brand name, high quality red dot "reflex" type sights can be had for under $200.
-If you prefer looking through a tube out of habit, etc, you can buy one of these dot sights in tube configuration. For some reason bullseye shooters tend to like these. . .maybe tradition. But the open "reflex" design is lighter, and improves your field of view a bit.
-If the idea of looking at a dot is a bit "weird", just imagine that you're looking at a projected dot from a laser superimposed on the target.
-No, a dot sight won't instantly turn you into a bullseye shooter. Or put it this way, putting a dot sight on your gun might quickly and significantly increase your accuracy (especially if your eyesight isn't good for focusing on iron sights), but it won't, by itself, suddenly turn you into a COMPETITVE shooter. You still have to spend the hundreds of hours and tens of thousands of rounds downrange for that!
Some people (including myself) still do like iron sights, because they present less "wobble" to the sight picture than a red dot bouncing all over the place. Note that you get the same exact amount of "wobble" with the iron sights. .. you just can't perceive it as well!0 -

What are you using it on?
A pistol? Go with Ultra Dot or the new Burris offerings
A shotgun? Many to choose from.
A long range rifle? With zero magnification it makes long shots at small items very difficult.
You shoot with both eyes open. The dot is projected inside the lens system much like a HUD display works on an aircraft windshield,one eye sees it, your brain perceives it. The dots can vary in size. Personally I find the wooble is easy to train yourself to ignore but if it does bother you a larger dot decreases the visible wobble.
FWIW I have two Ultra Dots and a TASCO pro Dot on competition bullseye pistols.0 -
Imho iron sights always, especially at least as a buis and I always make a point of adding them if they are absent just in case. I have found that the higher end name brand red dot sights/scopes are the way to go since the cheap red dot scopes like leapers, barska, ncstar, bsa and some others leave alot to be desired to say the least and would avoid if possible. While brands like Burris, Bushnell, Millet, Leatherwood, Adco, Weaver and Truglo are definitely functional but more expensive. And of course brands such as Aimpoint, Leopold, Eotech and Trijicon are excellent however very expensive, even at dealer cost are at least a bit pricey but very nice. 0 -

I would put it on a 10/22 Ruger. So it wouldn't be for real long shots.0
