XD Malfunction Revisited
Interestingly enough I am at a pistol class at a local gunsmithing school. I described the incident as we are discussing a variety of pistols and their various featurs. Well right after lunch I grabbed the XD and the grip safety did not work. It was in the fire position and wold not reset. What had happened is that the torsion spring that resets the grip safety was put in backwards and was bent. There is a very good possibility that this gun was taken apart and put together improperly. Another reason to function check.

Not disagreeing at all with this, even if the XD grip safety were inactivated, that still wouldn't. . .by itself. . .explain a pocket discharge.
The firing pin block safety would also have to be bypassed, either by its own separate mechanical malfunction, or by pulling the trigger.0 -
well if it is the gunsmiths school gun lotsa hands have had there way with it?? 0 -
yes, something else would have had to occur as well as the grip safety being disconnected. the odds of both safety's being disabled under normal circumstances does not seem possible unless the gun has been modified in some manner. good thing nobody was standing in front of him when he put it in his pocket 0 -
Both Springfield XD and Glocks are quality, well made, innovative yet unique designs and thoroughly tested and so there is a 99% chance that it was human negligence that caused such malfunctions. Its not to say that it couldn't happen in that manner that there could be a failure of that proportion to any weapon system being that they are human engineered and manufactured, just highly unlikely and not by itself. 0 -
The XD is at a competent gunsmith being checked out as we speak.
I'll post the results as soon as I know what they are.
