$20 vs. $500 torque wrench

    If it's for the barrel nut on the AR go with the $20 one. I picked up a Craftsman at a flea market. It had a moveable pointer instead of a dial, it did a OK job.

    I just got the video I was waiting for from brownells. They suggest tightening the barrel nut 30 ft/lbs. and trying not to go over by very much for the sake of maintaining accuracy. They also do not suggest putting on any grease or anti-sieze on it.

    Can I trust a $20 torque wrench to give me an accurate reading?

    I think within the measure of accuracy necessary for that job, yes.

    Guess what. . .if you go 28 or 31 ft-lbs I think you'll still be "OK".

    Like I said my Craftsman was accurate. I don't agree with not using grease or anti-size though. I used synthetic lithium grease on both the barrel shank and barrel nut when I did my build. As the barrel is steel and the upper is aluminum. I believe it's prudent thing to do to prevent the potential of electrolysis and galling, between the steel and aluminum.

    i have put quite a few together without a torque wrench. you really dont need it, unless your not adapt at being mechanical. also, you should ALWAYS use something on the threads. i always use high temp anti-sieze. you will definately get the barrel seated better if you put something on the threads.

    What are electrolysis and galling? Were you going for 30 ft/lbs?

    Do you have any idea how much torque you applied? Are they all tack drivers anyway? I wonder if it even matters if you over torque it. I put a lot into this project though, so I will follow their instructions to the T. I might put some type of anti-sieze though.

    i am a mechanic by trade for over 35yrs, and know the "feel" of tightening a fastener. when you do enough, you just know. the amount of torque is not going to affect accuracy unless it loosens while shooting. the quality of the barrel, how you break it in, what kind of ammo and what kind of scope affect accuracy. do it whatever way makes you comfortable. just be sure to put something on the threads.
