M1 Carbine ???
What do you want to look for on an M1 carbine, to know if it's valuable or just a shooter. Someone want to trade me a winchester M1 for a Leupold Mark 4 scope I have and I'm not sure if it's a good deal. I just don't know enough about them.

Read the auctions here. They give a lot of information on what is valuable or desirable. The earlier & more Winchester parts the better and of course its condition. What is the value of your scope? 0 -
Thats tough to say because there are so many things it depends on,is it original,some parts wont be Win.,what condition,ect,ect,ect ? a collector grade Win. will be worth more than the Leupold scope.A shooter in rough shape,maybe a draw if you really want a scope bad and dont want the carbine. 0 -
Winchester is the second most common carbine produced at 809,000
Look at the stock for stampings....W in the slingwell for a winchester stock, a crossed cannon, or a WRA, GHD, FJA, somewhere and make sure the stock has not been sanded or refinished. Does the handguard have 2 rivet or 4 rivet holes, early ones have 2 rivets.

Each of the metal parts were required to have the mfg's letter code stamped on them, and that would require the carbine to be disassembled. That would be daunting, an early model would have different parts than a later one.
Does it have a flip rear sight or an adjustable one? Adjustable sights were installed when they were redone by the armory. Does it have a bayonet lug attached to the forward sling swivel. Early ones don't.
Value depends on condition of stock, and having original parts.
probably from $800 to $1200.
Carbine ammo is an expensive plinker, so you would have to be fond of collecting military guns.

The things that make a shooter and a collector are two different arena's.
The collector's components, should be all one brand, and have matching numbers. Of course, the higher the graded condition, the better.
The next best thing would be an Arsenal rebuild, of all one brand of parts. Then would be and arsenal rebuild of mostly one brand of parts.
Once again, the higher the graded condition, will be reflected into the price tag.

This reminds me of the time I went car shopping with a master mechanic: many years of experience can't be compressed into a few responses on a forum. If you can't, at the least, post photos for us, I don't think we can help much.
The carbine you've been offered may turn out to be a broken commercial Universal with a pitted Winchester barrel, worth nothing. Or, it could be an early original Winchester worth $3,000. More likely, it will be something in between. Sorry, you're on your own.

Here is some info about it. I have a pic, just trying to figure out how to post it. THANKS The barrel has a W on top. The underside has a E or a sideways T. A G is stamped on the underside receiver by where the barrel screws in. Op rod has a ordnance bomb on the cocking lever. The barrel band/ bayonet lug has S1 stamped on it. Safety has EW. Trigger housing has W1. Looks like an H inside a shield on the side of the rear sights. The stock has BS on the wood by the grease holder. It has a W by the neck/wrist area. A GHB on the right side of the stock by the oilder with a ordnance symbel. Serial number of seven digits 5569XXX 0
