    Both appear to have been altered for aftermarket commercial sights. This usually has a negative effect on value for military rifle collectors. If they have been reworked in such a manner that it wouldn't be possible to replace the military sights, to put them back in original condition. They would only have value as shooters/hunting rifles, IMHO.

    those are SMLE's
    1st is a no4
    2cd is a no5 jungle carbine

    they are not in great shape and the sight looks missing n the mk4
    and the no5 has a aftermarket sight

    I love them, but these would be worth $200- for the No4
    and $300 for the no 5 if they have they had the right sights (which are actually really good)

    Yeah, the #4 has a scope mount for where the rear sight would go and the #5 is shorter in length by a good 5 inches with the flash hider. I think if someone had the original sight they would fit back on because I don't see any alterations in that area. They do look partialy sporterized. But they are Lee Enfields?

    Are they Lee Enfields? Yes, but not SMLEs. The rifle used earlier was the SMLE (Short, Magazine, Lee Enfield) aka the No.1 Mark III.

    About 1943 the British began production of an improved rifle, the No.4 Mk 1. Yours is marked FTR- Factory Thorough Repair- meaning it has been back for an arsenal level rebuild/ refurbish. It is a Lee Enfield, but not a SMLE.

    The one with the flash hider was converted by the military from a No.4, and is designated #5, aka Jungle Carbine.

    From what I've seen the No 4 rifle requires only reinstallation of the rear sight - either ladder or "L type" flip sight - to be made whole. The No 5 aftermarket sight looks like it's attached with the ejector screw and a screw or pin through the rear sight base, no permanent change was made.

    The correct sights are available through Numrich Arms, the L type is probably about $5.00 and the ladder about $30.00. The ladder is not windage adjustable however the front sight is easily drifted. SARCO sells a modified military issue ladder that is windage adjustable.

    It was common practice to cut down No4s to make No5s - pop the forend upper handguard and so long as you have scallop cuts taking metal out of the top of the barrel where it meets the receiver it's probably a No5. The bolt handle is hollow, as it should be, so that's a good sign.

    Just my "guesstimate" but the No4 is probably and about $250.00 rifle, I think the shape looks pretty good. I think the No5 should go for over $400.00. I remember when these were sold for about $15.00 each, hard to believe they now get up there in value.

    i have a No4 Mk1* that is probably my most accurate milsurp rifle. great guns, but prices have fallen for shooters since all the milsurp ammo dried up. PRVI still makes a decent 303 british with reloadable brass. lee has dies for the .303 british
    you mentioned a scope mount for the #4. enfield made a no4 sniper rifle (T) with scopes like this. they sell for more $$.

    re the No5. it's probably original, but during the 60's a lot of No4's were converted to No5 look-a-likes. most of the original used No5's are shot out as they were used well after ww2 in southeast asia. nowadays, you can still get $300 for a good shooter with decent furniture and quite a bit more for a "collectible".
    last year a documented, original unissued No5, like new, went for over $8000.
    shooter No4's, in good condition are $150-175 around here. they were twice that 3 yrs ago when milsurp ammo was still plentiful.
    if you list the no5 let me know. i have a buddy that would want it for parts. he refinishes/rebuilds no4's and no5's as a hobby (and beer money). he doesn't like spending much $$ though.

    Thanx Tom, the scope mount is probably an aftermarket that locks in at the old rear sight mount and has a Weaver style rail with notches on it. Yours looks like a original sniper conversion. They were the best of the best.

    They are both marked as Fazakerly reworks, the No.4 also appears to have had the safety replaced with an earlier one (which would have been done privately). Other parts may have been privately changed as well. Shooters.

    Not SMLE's . Indeed Lee Enfield a No4 & a No5 jungle carbine.genuine too .They Look reasonable , parts & spares are plenty full, check e*bay. check the bores, as they have been used plenty as target rifles on a range , & could have had warm rounds thru, or some corrosive mil-surp. ;)
