Is Rock Island still 'crock island'?
I would like to get a lower price (cheap) 1911 style 9mm.
I guess the only choices in this are Rock Island (Armscor[?]) or Taurus.
Which would be the best choice between these firearms? (I know, I know you get what you pay for) but this firearm is only for plinking and 'paper punching'.

In that case, instead of buying new, I highly recommend you visit a few small gun shops that have used guns on consignment or some pawn shops. Do your research ahead of time and dicker for a fair price. I have bought many very serviceable, if not pretty, guns this way. 0 -
Never heard that neg about RIA but there are alot of unfounded opinions by the 'internet experts' out there. Nothing wrong with Rock Island Armory 1911's besides the erroneous opinion that because it is of a lower cost and made in a foreign country opposed to the overly expensive 1911's made in the u.s. that it cant possibly be quality. However that couldn't be further from the truth as the facts say otherwise including but not limited to Patrick Sweeney and this is also true for the Smith & Wesson MP15 rifles although made in the u.s. as well. Some prefer the basic no-frills models over the more overly expensive types, as the basic types are not meant to be 'high end' (a loose term open to interpretation and unnecessary) but just functional. This doesn't make them any less quality as price doesn't necessarily constitute quality and when people refuse to pay such ridiculous prices for u.s. goods because they are set so high for obvious profiteering then there is no alternative but to purchase foreign. However to question national loyalty over such trivial things if that was the intent is just silly ignorance and considering the source of such should just be ignored as such places seem to render the same internet nonsense since no matter what is believed or said is still shown contempt and disdain. Regards.

I have had no experience with the Taurus 1911's, only with their Judge, it was a piece of caca. On the other hand I have heard good stuff about Rock Island's, P.I. made 1911's. 0 -
Lots of us happy RIA owners around... No issues with mine after several thousand rounds... 0 -
When you pull the dagger from the American craftsman's back, please be gentle. 0 -
Rock Island identified a market niche that was going unfilled- for a no-frills 1911 that was meant for the shooter who wanted a reliable, fun gun and didn't care about skeleton triggers and hand lapped barrels and 1/1000" barrel bushing tolerance. If you want that you can add it yourself. And yes, I do know they have some higher end models, but their high end is like calling a Ford Escort with nice rims 'high end.' And as such, they do very well, are reliable, and perfectly functional. I have had zero issues with mine.
I'd not hesitate to say 'buy one!'0 -
Thanks to all who posted.
I am going to try a RI 1911 9mm and after I get it and shoot it I will post my experience.
This is a great place to acquire knowledge.
After all experience is the direct result of poor judgement and I can avoid that by soliciting good advice[:D]0 -
