G Murian French Pistol Recognition
I have a seemingly old (maybe antique?) French pistol. From reading...I gather that the inscription simply has his name and the rest is the address? Am I correct with that? Can anyone tell me what this is? Maybe when it was made? I see no serial number or model number. Just the inscription on the top of the barrel and a proof mark on the side.

It appears to be a target pistol. Do a chamber cast and slug the bore to figure out what caliber. Similar guns were made in the States by Stevens for 50+ years from the 1870's to at least the 1920's. There might be additional proof marks concealed on the breech of the barrel, or on the frame underneath the barrel. It appears to be in Very Good condition, might be of interest to a collector of target pistols. 0 -
G. Morian is not in littlegun's lists of French and Belgian makers, and he may have only been a retailer: http://www.littlegun.info/
Bte. is an abbreviation for brevete, which means patent. It's a near perfect copy (?) of the Stevens Lord model. Can you add a closup of the proofmark you mention?
A google search finds the name used on late 1800s sword canes and revolvers.0 -
Here is the proof mark. I couldnt find it in the blue book (not that its a leading authority on proofs but its generally pretty good I assume) under any nationality much less French. It's simply a star over Z. Stumped am I! 0 -

The proof mark appears to be Belgian rather then French. It denotes a specific inspector. The "Z" was only used by one inspector in the Belgian proof facility. It's very strange as this proof mark was used in conjunction with at least two others, never alone. I have never seen this before.0 -
Remove the barrel or use a light to examine underside of barrel breech, as the ELG in oval Liege proofmark may be there. 0 -
Took everything apart except for the receiver...she's bone dry except the * over Z. There's a JL on the receiver beneath the wood grips...not sure what it is. I too found the canes and even the mention of a shotgun but can't track it down too far. Finally hit a stumper I suppose hehe! 0
