Am I still o.k.?
I made arrangemants for a trade online. I found someone who said he had a Puma .454 lever action that he wanted to trade for a .40 S&W handgun.
I made arrangements to meet, to trade him my Magnum Research IWI "Baby Eagle" in .40 S&W. (roughly 90-95% in my opinion) for his Puma .454 Casull.
In state transfer between two residents is legal where I am.
Anyway, I met him after a 1 1/2 hour drive. His was similar. I looked the rifle over and all seemed as described. Condition is like new, except for a few minor dings on the wood from hunting. He claimed it had only 60 rounds through it, and after close inspection I believe it. Even the internals are still very clean.
Now comes the issue. When I got it home,I noticed I didn't see the name Puma on it anywhere, so I started looking closer. I found A. ROSSI A.- Made in Brazil stamped on the tang under the lever.
Insert face-palm here.
Now I started looking, and this appears to be a newer model,aslo stamped- MA02**** on the under side of the frame. This is a blued, round barreled rifle, but it does have the dual loading capability. It has the standard load-gate on the right side of the frame, but it also has a screw-off removeable magazine tube, and a loading/unloading gate in the magazine tube.
The rifle is in excellent condition, and it is chambered for the .454 round that I was looking for.
I have not communicated this to the trader yet, I want to get an idea where I stand first.
What's your opinion? Did I get hurt? I don't know if his ad was an honest mistake or not, but the rifle is clearly NOT the brand he listed in his ad. I'm not sure how anyone could make that mistake, but I made the mistake of NOT making a detailed inspection at the meet. We were in a McDonalds parking lot.

Yes, you are still OK. PUMA, I believe is a model name from Rossi, for a time span of their 1892 style rifles and carbines. I am sure at least, that they are both made in the same plant.

Rossi made the Puma. The Puma's model no. starts with PUMAo, somewhere the first two letters on your rifle were not stamped or it's an older/newer model.
I believe you got the better of the trade and you defintely have a scarce caliber that's not easy to come by.
The Baby Eagle would value at 5-500.00 and your rifle at 600+
Maybe someone else may have an answer for your model number.

Well I'm sure glad to hear that! I don't really care about a name, but I don't like being taken advantage of.
I knew the .454 Casull was hard(er) to find, and I saw the opportunity to pick one up at a reasonable price for me.
That, and I still have another Baby Eagle in .40S&W!
This new .454 will be out in the field for deer season.0 -
Just be careful what you feed that. I would stay with milder loads. It is a 100-125 yard gun at best. No need to push it, as I am not all that sure of the metalurgy in ANY 1892, being able to stand up long to a steady diet of hot 454's.
