Caliber Help..40-65/40-82 Winchester 1886

I was asked this question one one of my guns..

Hello from Maine, Nice 1886. Say, I'm wondering if you can tell me: Can a 40-65 cartridge be safely fired in a 40-82 gun? or is this a no no?

Whats the answer boys ?

  Never had any personal experience with either of these cartridges. That said, the data section of "Cartridges of the World", shows the the rim, base and neck diameters to be virtually identical given expected manufacturing tolerances. Only the length of cartridge case and overall loaded length of loaded cartridge shows a difference of approximately .030. I wouldn't attempt to run the 40-65 through a 86 chambered for a 40-82, in fear of jamming the mechanism because of the shorter OAL, though.

  A difference of .030" in case and cartridge length would not matter much in the old BP or low pressure nitro calibers like that.
  Unfortunately, the difference is actually .300".
  
  I doubt it would blow up, the .40-65 head diameter is the same as .40-82 and the case body should expand to seal the chamber.
  But the bullet jumping that .300" through the chamber neck before it got to the rifling would not do anything good for accuracy.
  
  I would think it worse than shooting .45-70 in a .45-90 and that is not great.
