Winchester 70, question mag&non-mag bolts?
Have two post 64 win 70's. one is a 300 win mag and the other is a 30-06.
While cleaning the guns I noticed that the 300 win mag bolt will slide into the 30/06 receiver and close up ok and vice vesa, the 30 06 slides into the 300 mag and closes ok???
The bolt on the 300 mag is about 1/2 inch longer than the 30/06 and the real of the magnums two locking lugs are at about the front of the 30 06's locking lugs.
This don't seem correct, especially for the shorter 06 bolt to close up ok in the mag receiver. this seems to indicate that the locking lugs on the 300 mag bolt is not supported at the rear when in it''s chamber???
These two guns are factory OEM receivers with matching bolts!
Can anyone explain why the two different length bolts, one even being the longer magnum caliber will close up and function smoothly in these two factory winchester receivers???

This would be a good one for our friend, Nononsense. I know he is a lot mor familiar with the dimensions of these actions, and bolts, than most of us combined. I am sure he will be along shortly.

I though the 300 win mag was made to fit in a 30/06 length action. 0 -
Yes, but what about the locking lugs on the bolt inside the action?
(no way they lugs can be suppoprted at their rear, because the 06 bolt closes in the 300 receiver)0 -

These are very accurate model 70 hunting rifles, not pieces of junk that we have been using for several years.
No way Remington 700 bolts would interchange into their receivers with standard long action calibers like these model 70's bolts allow?
I have not asked a gunsmith yet! I'm thing right now that the magnum receiver is not even safe to shoot due to no support at the rear of the bolt lugs???0 -
unless I'm mistaken Win. only made ONE lenght receiver lenght, the onlt difference between mag. and standard cals. is the dia. of the bolt face. you coulds 'swap' bolts to your hearts content with a barrel/caliber change. 0 -

You are correct! Since no one was talking (answering) I went back and removed the bolts and measured from the front AND rear of the locking lugs to the front of the bolt handle, which is the chambering for lockup without a hull inserted and their length was same, therefore all ok. All the guns had the G series serial number.
I need to take a engraver and add guns serial number to the bolts so as to not them swapped! (the numbers are worn off)
I noticed awhile back that some of the Sears Model 53 (Win 70 made by win for sears) bolts would not interchange with regular Win model 70's due to different machining cuts in the Sears Model 53 bolts.
Bottom line: keep a heads up with a Win 70 rifles bolts and not get them mixed up! (or you could end up with headspace issues or worse)0
