Ready to replace my Tasco scope. Any recommendations for a quality benchrest scope (around $500)? Any brand I should steer clear of?

Resolution is the key NOT power. For the most part with optics you get what you pay for. Try Champions Choice they sell supplies to CamP Perry shooters and know what you would need Ask for Homer.

As perry shooter suggested...it is quality that will help the most here, not quantity. By far, quality is the most expensive aspect of any glass used for viewing. The better the quality, the better the image, the more the $$.

I have used the Vortex Viper PST rifle scope, but not their binoculars or spotting scope. If cost is an issue, then look at the Nikon models.

What about a different approach ...

There are targets that show a much larger "hit"

Shoot and see by birchwood casey.

they have a coating that is blown away and reveals a hole thats bigger than the actual hole.

    15.00 vs 500 for a scope?

Don't own a Vortex scope, but have used one and own Vortex binos. It is a lot of scope for the price.

I have a Vortex impact angled 25-75x70 MM that is well under your price range and still meets your intended use.

There are several listings on ebay, {elsewhere} and gunbroker that may offer what you want and once you know what you want you could find a really good deal there, its worth a look anyway... Another option that is popular today would be to consider trading something that you dont need of value for a really nice spotting scope of value, anyway just a thought.
