7mm Mag to shoot smaller cartridge??
Does ANYBOBY know of an adapter to shoot smaller, less powerful, cartridges out of a 7mm Mag barrel??? I know they make adapters for almost every other caliber? HELP. Thanks

Recoil, the nemesis of shooters. To reduce recoil you can use (1) lighter bullets or (2) reduced loads. I am not aware of an adapter to convert your 7MM mag to 7 Mauser. You can handload to lower MV's to reduce recoil. Cast bullets are another VERY good option. 0 -
7mm Remington Magnum - 145 grain Speer SP bullet, 28.0 grains of SR 4759 powder, CCI 250 primer, Rem. case. COL 3.280". MV 2112 fps in 24" barrel. (Based on the Speer Reloading Manual No. 13.)
Edit: In case you don't know, this would be a very light load with maybe half the pressure of the regular 7mm mag although with such a small charge there is a risk of accidentally charging the case twice.0 -

You'd need both a barrel liner and a chamber adapter, and some way of connecting the 2 together.. or make it out of one big piece of steel.
Its doable - thats how the old HK made 22 conversions for the FN-FAL work, and how it is being re-engineered by a guy in Utah.
But you have to ask your self... after thousands of $ in set up, etc. how many of such adapters can you sell and at what price before you break even? With a minimum of 75 conversions, the guy making the new production FAL conversions has to get $429 each for 'em to just break even on set up and materials costs... no $ for his time/labor - that will come down the road with future sales. But he wouldn't start production beyond a hand made beta unit until 75 units were paid for...
So yes, it is possible. Feasible? Mebbe not...0 -

Well, it is going to be a problem, as most of the smaller cartridges will not extract in the magnum bolt face...unless you have a single shot. I am thinking, if the action can't be salvaged, and rebarreled, then toss it so no one gets hurt, by firing something they shouldn't in it.

I have a 308 with a 22 caliber conversion, but it is a new bolt assembly and a full length chamber and barrel insert. It cost as much as a new rifle.
I also have seen adapters that are sized to the parent cartridge chamber.

But in this case, you have a bullet wandering down a larger diameter barrel and your accuracy isn't very good.0 -
Hello Partsman lets just say you did shoot an over load in this 7MM Mag.Did a gunsmith tell you it is unsafe to shoot [?]. If so are there Cracks in some of the metal parts [?] I think we need more information on the damage to your rifle . If say the bolt has set back in the receiver locking lugs then a reduced loading will not then allow you a normal operation . If the receiver is cracked then I would not use it with even a 22 rimfire. Please give us more information. 0 -
Before you get too involved making plans, there's just no inexpensive way to do what you want to do. Why not salvage what you can from the rifle and start over? Is it that nice that it's worth saving? A new Stevens costs $299 and the very nice Weatherby Vanguard is available in a version for under $500.
How do you know it shouldn't be fired, were the lugs set back? How bad was the overload? Are there any cracks?0 -
The Bolt head to the BRUNT (broke it in to 3 parts) of the damage, with a little damage to the barrel lugs. There is NO cracks or any damage to the frame/barrel or Bolt parts, Just the head. Several GUNSMITHS said it should NOT be loaded with the round intended for it. A casting of the chamber shows a very small amount of OVER SIZING of the chamber. I hate to end it's life, if I can get an adapter for it? I saw somewhere an adapter to shoot .22 in a 7mm mag, but can not find it now. Again, I hate to turn it into a garden stake???? 0
