Stevens 35 tip up info
Just picked up a Stevens tip up pistol in .22 long rifle. Serial #3576X. Any Idea of what year it was made. It has the stamped trigger guard vs the cast type, so I know it is the later style. Appreciate any info. Thanks.

Richard, I have a pair, one with a 36xxx and the other a 52xxx serial. Neither of which has what you would consider the "stamped"
trigger guard. Possibly that was a feature on the earlier guns.
They make great little guns for getting little ones familiar with
handguns, small grips and a very deliberate firing sequence.0 -

By "stamped", I mean that it is made out of sheet metal, not cast/forged from what I have found on the internet. Looks like it will be fun to try out later on.0 -

Flayderman states that the sheet metal guard was used after 1929.0 -
Richard, I was looking at a few pictures and mine are the cast
style. Not sure what to tell you since I have no idea wether they maintained a "consecutive" pattern to their serial numbers. Mine
being higher numbered and cast puts a bit of a question mark on
the stamped guards being on the latter guns. At any rate, enjoy
your's. I keep one in my fannypack for grouse during deer and elk

and other than the trigger guard being different, it is identical.
The side of my barrel reads:
J.STEVENS ARMS COMPANY
CHICOPEE FALLS MASS. U.S.A.
Although mine has the later trigger guard, the one in the auction has a higher serial number. It also looks like the trigger guard is not interchangeable, as the forward screw hole in a different location.
Can anyone recommend a reference book?

Love those Stevens. Your pistol was made 1923-1942. The book you want is Stevens Pistols And Pocket Rifles by Kenneth L. Cope. I purchased mine at Dixie Gun Works and it was under order #B0034 if it is still the same. 0 -
Your Stevens was made by Savage after they purchased Stevens. Made from 1923 1942. They changed to the stamped guard sometime after 1929 As for the serial no's Savage started again from 1 up to 43357. That explains the difference in numbers when compaired to the Older model 35 Offhand Target. Unfortunatly records were destroyed when Stevens left the old factory. So any date would be an estimate. 0 -
