    dfletcher,

I suggest that you try Huntington's in Oroville, CA.

Unless you can find a bag or two in the out-of-the-way small stores, you may just have to wait in line.

I have made several dozen phone calls to suppliers to get any answer at all. I have been informed that Remington has made the decision to produce ammunition instead of components given the current market trends.

Nosler is showing stock of the .300 RUM brass at an outrageous price but do what you have to do...

However, in the mean time, yes you can neck up the .300 RUM brass as long as you pay attention the rest of the brass prep steps. It will take more than a couple expanding steps but just go at it a little at a time. Be sure to use something like Imperial Sizing Wax the ease the transition of the expanders in the necks.

    Best.

    ADDED:

There is .300 RUM brass available through Midsouth Shooters Supply:

    http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=0005022850100

Your choices are to wait for the next run of brass from Remington or buy the .300 to neck up in 3 steps. Trying to make due with the .338 RUM necked up is the wrong technique and attempts should not be made.

    Best.

    Doug,

I tried to get some at some of my North East, and Southern distributors for you, but to no avail. I will keep my ears open.

Just a couple, three months back there were a number of folks here attempting to part with 500 pieces of Remington .375 RUM brass for a very reasonable price.

If I find my notes, I'll check into it again on the off chance. I wanted the brass and it was for a very fair and reasonable price. My finances were thin and uncertain at the time, unfortunately (for me and for you) as I'd been in a position to assist you.

Hopefully someone with a supply will volunteer to give you a bit of a hand! [^]

(( I can and will check with a brother and see how he is set or not. If he has room to spare, I'll notify you of same. ))

    =========================

Doug - checked about some, did you consider getting some .338 RUM brass and stepping it up from there? Sinclair International (Brownell's) shows some .338 RUM brass at $110/100 available there. You might wish to jump?

Good Luck to you. Let us know what happens?

Had attempted to contact you via email to no avail.

Have not as yet succeeded in reaching that Brother of mine, but will let you know if he has any NONE to spare. SORRY!

We had been forming and loading .300, .338 and .375 RUM brass a couple months back. Will be messing with the RUMs a bit later, when I can get set-up again down here.

Some of the larger retailers like basspro or cabelas have online stores. I think Outdoor World the first place I ever actually saw a bag of 375 RUM.

I tried necking up the 338 RUM brass, actually bought a bag and did all the sizing last night only to find the 338 shoulder distance is shorter than the 375 case - guess I should have checked that before spending the time sizing up. [:(]

I backordered from Brownells, we'll see how long it takes. Thanks (to all) for the offers to keep an eye out, I'll be happy to get what can be spared.

BTW, if anyone wants a great deal on a 50 ct bag of "used to be 338 RUM" brass let me know. I'm sure it can be sized back down from 375.

Why can't you fire form the 338 brass in the 375 chamber?

Years back when I use to shoot at a public range in cali. I use to run across lots of .308/7.62 X 51 brass laying on the ground that had been fired in 30-06 Grands. Nothing happened to the brass when the shoulder was blown forward on firing other then shorting the neck length.

EDIT #1, I believe that the Remington has a push feed mechanism rather then control feed. You might expand the neck only of the 338 brass so that they will be a tight fit in the 375 chamber. With the expanded neck establishing the correct headspace, try fireforming the 338 brass to form the shoulder to the proper dimension.

The cases are so short in the shoulder that when I chamber a primed empty case the firing pin doesn't even strike the primer. The "converted 375 RUM" case is so short it doesn't even depress the ejector plunger - it just rests on it so there's no contact with the bolt face.

I suppose I could do some sort of single load, hook the case rim under the extractor and close the olt, hop the extractor holds the case fast against the bolt face. But then I'm wondering about a) safety and b) I'm tossing expensive .375 diameter bullets downrange with little hope of any accuracy.

Edit 1: Remington is push feed. I did neck size only, the issue is the length from case head to shoulder - too short. The only solution I see is seating the bullets out so they engage the rifling and "push back" the case when the bolt is closed. Light load, bullet in rifling - safe?

If you want the bullet to control headspace, maybe you could find some 3/8 nylon rod from Mcmaster.com or someone and use that for a bullet?

The 308 cases the other guy found would have been severely stretched internally. They might have had a head separation if you had reloaded them.

Lightly lubing the case would seem to make headspacing less critical because the case could not stick to the chamber walls before the pressure pushed the head back. Some say not to do it because the case grips the chamber wall and prevents too much bolt thrust, but how much bolt thrust could you possibly save? The amount of force equal to yield the thin brass case.

As far as the expensive .375 bullets to use in fire forming your cases: I would suggest you look for some 220 gr. Hornady bullets that were made for the .375 Winchester. Who knows, in your fire-forming program you may even find a nice deer load with those bullets.

    dfletcher,

While innovative thinking is always a wonderful thing to encounter, this form of cobbling suggested by some is unacceptable. Oil in any chamber is also unacceptable.

As I stated before, wait for the new run, stumble onto a small supply from another shooter or out-of-the-way store or use .300 RUM for the modified cases.

    Best.
