M1 Carbine Jamming issue
so I built an m1 carbine ground up, Its built mag feeds fine and everything I shoot the first shoot slide goes back as it should then jams and I have to push the slide to load the next shot. I need help with this and am looking for any suggestions. I'd rather not take it to a smith because I want to figure it out myself rather then pay someone to fix it.

You may have a worn out recoil spring, the one that goes into the op-rod. When you built the gun did you use surplus parts? Out of spec parts can result in unreliable functioning. 0 -
I've taken that out And even without the recoil spring it happens. 0 -
LL was asking if the recioil spring you used was a new one, or an old one. Often the older ones are tired and won't pick up the round from the mag and they jam as you describe. Without the recoil spring installed, it wontt work at all.
If you used an old set of springs, try Wolff Springs for a new set.0 -
Why would you think it would work at all without the spring?
Could also be the ammo you are using is powerful enough to cycle and eject but not with enough force to compress the spring and load the new round. What are you using?0 -
It does sound like a recoil spring. The other thing that it might be is the magazine, if you are using the same one all of the time try another. If it is not a USGI magazine could also be a problem. When you pull the slide all the way back you are taking up more of the tension of the spring and when it cycles there is less tension. something is impeding the forward thrust of the bolt or the spring is weak.

[Edit] There is a change that the rail that the slide rides inn may have a burr and even more radical the barrel could be out of index and causing a binding.0 -

He is not a gunsmith as he has said he dose not want to take it to a gunsmith.
Building a gun from the ground up has many connotations. It could be from parts kits. It could be from new parts. Either way it sounds like he has no idea what needs to be done to make it work.
I remember when a win 22 auto came in that would not work. The owner took it apart for cleaning. We took it apart and put it together and the dang thing would not work. Simple gun so why not? Come to find out you needed to put it together in a certain order or it would not work. Go figure. Still baffles me to this day.
30 carbines are not easy guns. M1 carbines are not easy guns. Garands are not easy guns. They are real easy if you know about them. I heard of a guy that could straighten an op rod that looked like a pretzel. That came from the same guy that was working in the armory when the delivery man from Springfield showed up with a trunk full of new ammo and some full automatic guns built on the Garand. Story goes he had no idea what he was taking for Army trials.
Lots of guns I would like to have. One of those is top on my list. I think they are all spoken for. Back in my brain there were 14 of them.
A Stoner would be one of the other on my list.0
