Iver Johnson 12 ga Ring trigger
I bought three shotguns, one which is, an Iver Johnson Ring Trigger. The receiver and the bluing is VG. The bore is very shiny with very little pitting at all. Overall it is in very good shape for a century old shotgun. It locks up tight and there is another level to loosen the barrel, a barrel latch..... The Sn is 47XXX which makes it quite early. I would like to shoot it since it is such good shape..
My question is; I think this is a black powder shotgun and thus can't shoot modern shells so who is familiar with these guns, and am I correct in thinking it is a black powder gun? And if it is black powder, where do I get the ammo?

Made 1897-1904, so yes, black powder era. 0 -
My reference says that the Ring Trigger Opening Model was made from 1902 to 1908, slight difference from hrf's dates but still a black powder and lead shot loaded 2 1/2 inch shells. The gun can still be fired if in good safe condition and appropriate ammunition is used. I recommend that you have it checked out by a good competent gunsmith before you attempt to shoot it. A little searching will find a source for black powder loaded shells. 0 -

It is in remarkable condition. It locks up tight and the bore is mirror like with some tiny scattered pitting.
I know what you mean about leaving it be, but it just looks like a good old shooter.
But I will have a gunsmithy give it the once over if I decide to shoot it. Better safe than no right hand or worse. Thanks OD0 -

Gunsmith, of course.... It only makes sense. I don't want to get hurt nor do I want to ruin such an oldie but goodie. Black powder shells Thanks OD0 -

But limited info on long guns and serial number data only for revolvers.0
