What is this?
I have just got a bolt action rifle. It is marked as follows: U.S. Springfield Armory Model 1899. So it is not an 03 and not a 98. Just what the heck have I got here?
If your gonna be stupid you better be tough !!

Any manufactur name stamped on it?
Is that a spring or thread on top?
Is the center hollow? Also, does the outside spin around the inside?
looks like maybe some form of depth micrometer made by Starrett?0 -

Threads. No mfg markings.0 -
Does it have a hole in the side?
First thought is it looks like a dog whistle.0 -
No holes. It is all solid, It almost has to be a measuring device. I figured it was gun related. The main part with the knruled edge and numbers threads up and down. 0 -
Do you have any dimensions for us to go by? That would help.

About 2.5" long 0 -
OK I see the lines, thought they were just numbers. How deep is each index marking?
Possibly pan or nipple primer for black powder?0 -
The marks a are lengthways. So the marks line up with the number marks when you twist it. 0 -

It is not hollow, and the numbered portion and the jamb nut thread up and down. The rest is stationary.0
