10 22 Upgrades
My squirrel problem is out of hand and I'm upgrading my Ruger 10/22. I've got it shooting one hole groups at 50 yds now.
While researching my project, I came across some other suggested improvements and I'm wondering if there is any advantage in putting in a buffer and changing the V block.

Thanks for the advise. This is an older 10 22 with a 114 prefix. It has a metal buttplate, not the plastic they use now.
So far, all I've done is put a heavy barrel and synthetic stock (not a top of the line so they're heavy) on it, threw the 22 scope and rimfire base away and put a good base and rings with 1/2 way decent scope. I plan on upgrading the scope when funds permit.
I have a new target trigger assembly coming to replace that really bad factory one.
Guess I'll order the buffer. Any suggestions?

what would the V block upgrade do other than cost money??? 0 -
If I had a 10-22 that shot true one ragged hole at 50 yards I would by more of that lot of ammo. Changing things to make a rifle shoot better can work and be a bargin, but in your case will the critter care if its hit between the eyes or in the eye? 0 -

YES You do NEED a Buffer. But be Careful as there are JUNK Buffers on the Market.
The V-Bolck as long as it Fits Well, I use it.
Both the BOLT and the Trigger Aslm. are VERY INPORTAIN.Along with a TRAGET GRADE BARREL and Good Stock.
Besure that you have a 1st. Class Scope and Mounts!As You cant shoot any better then you can See !
RUGER is now using a lot of POLY,I dont like POLY so I replace ALL of it.
I beleive in one hole GROUPS. (But how Large is the Hole?)LOL.0 -

I sold the last in a long line of 10/22 last year. It was from the first or second year of production and taught me once again, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it." Original barrel, beavertail foreend. Only modification I made was to lighten the trigger pull and install an overtravel screw. On a calm day it would hold well under 1" at 100 yards, 5 shot groups. I never got into all the wonderful aftermarket doo=dads though I don't see how a good buffer could do anything but help.0 -
Buffer actually does reduce felt recoil a bit and make the gun cycle quieter. That's worth a few bucks, I think.
If you've got 1 hole groups, I wouldn't bother changing the V-block. If it aint broke, don't fix it!0 -
I use a Lot of KIDD PRODUCTS and also TACTICAL SOLUTIONS I Put HOGUE OM Stocks on them, and find All Three to be Great Products.On the Scope and Mounts, It depends on the entended use as what I use.
I never could shoot a Heavy trigger, So I do a lot of Work replaceing the Factory trigger set-up.
While you are on the V-Bocks, DO NOT OVER TIGHTEN.PUT THE SMALLER SCREWS IN WITH THE SMALL ALLEN HEAD, SO THAT YOU WONT OVER TIGHTEN..0 -
If after all those upgrades, you reinstall the factory barrel how much difference would you see? 0 -
You can expect to Spend $250.00 or more for a MATCH GRADE BARREL.I was just quoted $350.00 Pluss $50.00 More if I wamnted it in Blue or Gold Color.

How Tight of Group do you want?
I have both 18 1/2" and 22" FACTORY Stainless Barrels, but they are NOT good enough for Me.
The worst falt that I find with a FACTORY 10-22 is their 8-9 lb. trigger pull.if you want to shout Small groups.
To shoot tight groups, then you DONT WANT NO MORE THEN 3lb. trigger pull ! or you will pull your Gun OFF TARGET,in pulling a Heavy Trigger.0 -
I have a 10/22 sporter that was worked over by Chjef AJ about 20yrs ago that will do one hole at 50yds with ammo it likes.
It cost $65 for him to work his stuff on the stock gun, at the time.
It shoots right with my Shillen barreled one that weighs much more [^]0
