Colt 1911 in .40 S&W

I recently acquired a full size Colt 1911 Government Model MK IV, series 80 in .40 S&W. It looks like a Combat Elite (2 tone blue/stainless with rubber wrap-around grips). I did not know Colt made anything in .40 S&W....does anyone have any info on it?

  Wouldn't it be series 90 since .40S&W came out in what mid '90's? Is the slide stamped .40S&W or just the barrel? If it's just the barrel I'd think someone just added the barrel to make her shoot .40S&W.

  Unless you have the box and paperwork, that says it was made in 40 S&W, or it says it on the slide or frame, then it looks like someone had a 40 S&W barrel fitted to it. There are several manufacture's of 40 S&W 1911 magazines out there.

  Where do you get Series 90 from? It does not go by the year or decade of manufacture.

  No box or paperwork. It has 40 S&W on the barrel but not the slide or frame. However, it has a Colt 40 S&W full size STS clip. I talked with the guy at my local gunshop about it today. He said Colt made a bunch of Defenders in 40 S&W and a few full sized series 80's in the early 90's, which he thinks that's what I have. Thanks!

  According to Colt, they made about 2500 of them. They are Series 80 guns. I have a couple of them.
