Modifying a shotgun choke?
Ok, I found an older shotgun with fixed choke, I have been looking for this model in a 20 gauge for with vent rib for some time. Found a very nice one and it has only one issue in my mind, it has a fixed full choke. I would like at least a modifed choke, IMP cyl, would be better. Would you advise having the barrel opened up. Finding barrels in this model in a 20 gauge with a vent rib is tough. What do you advise. The model in question is a Remington 58. Wondering what to do as a vent rib barrel in this gauge will cost me at least 200.00, IF I can find one, thanks.

When steel shot became mandatory it was common to open up the barrels of full choked shotguns. I recently had a Model 12 that was made in 1951 with a full choked barrel, that was opened up to improved cylinder.
Most any knowledgeable gunsmith who specializes in shotguns could do it for you. Whatever you do don't let some idiot take a Dremel to it. Make sure that he has the correct size reamer and knows how to use it.0 -
I'm wondering why you want a more open choke? Have you considered screw in choke tubes? There are ways to reload that will act like a more open choke. 0 -
When I worked in a shop, we opened chokes with a brake cylinder hone. Those exerted uniform pressure, kept the sides of the choke parallel, and could be used to remove scant amounts of metal at a time. A lot of people wanted chokes that were between the degrees of chokes that were offered by the factories. This was before the day of screw-in types. The final finish was determined by the abrasive shoes, which could be changed as necessary. Some trap shooters believed that a rougher finish in the last inch gave better patterns. 0 -

I have used all of the above methods. In order of my advise:
1. If enough wall go with the screw in choke tubes, I do not recommend the "thin wall" tubes if using hunting loads.
2. Get a poly choke (yes they still sell them) mounted. If you want to keep the value of the gun this may not be an option.
3. Have a gunsmith open the barrel to the choke requested.
4. Use a brake hone to open the barrel, little at a time, it doesn't take to much.

+1 I sent Briley a superposed and had it fitted with screw in chokes. They group beautifully. Also had the forcing cone lengthened.0
