Colt 1st generation
Bought a colt first generation 1901 44-40. Gun is good condition but it has a black power cyclinder in it. How hard is it to find a correct cyclinder and the cost. Thanks You

What makes you think it has a black powder cylinder in it?
I've consolidated my posts since the thread will be locked shortly after the 10th post.
Update 1: Sadly, if it has a number on the outside of the cylinder it is probably a serial number and Colt didn't serialize the cylinders in 1901. I assume the number doesn't match the last 4 digits of the gun's serial number. Is the number stamped on the face, side, or rear of the cylinder?
Does the same number appear on any other surfaces, like inside the stocks on the grip frame? The reason I ask is when a Single Action went back to Colt and rework was performed, Colt stamped a rework number on parts of the Colt if significant rework was performed. Does it have an ampersand (&) or asterisk (*) stamped on the right rear trigger guard bow?
Update 2: If you can take some in focus, high resolution, and detailed pictures of the Single Action and post them here we might be able to figure out what is going on with your Single Action. Cylinder beveling will be a good indicator of the general age of the cylinder.

It has a 4 digit number on the outside of the cyclinder. My info says it is black power. I hope that I am wrong. 0 -

If it's a 1901 gun you should have a smokeless cylinder in it.
Colt guaranteed their SAAs against smokeless powder in 1900 in the beginning of that year.0 -

If it's S/N'd to the gun, it's correct.
A replacement may or may not just drop in and function.
That is, cylinder gap may be too great or small and/or the ratchet may need filing to time correctly. In any case,a new cylinder bushing will have to be fit with no end play.
I think it's The American Gun Co in Ct that makes a dead ringer for the SAA will fit you up with a new cylinder with chambers to SAAMI specs.0
