S&W semi auto's ????
ok so i have a group of diff 9mm S&W pistols from late 80's and early 90's was wondering if anyone know if any of the 9mm series guns can be reto fitted to be .40 cal.
some of the pistols i have are
59
659
5906
5903
6906
mostly wondering if the 4000 series will drop in said series above

Because of the larger rim diameter of the 40, it's doubtful to me. The breech block area of the slide between the extractor hook and the firing pin has to be greater in diameter to accommodate the 40.
Remove the slide from one of your 9's. See if a fired 40 cartridge case can be slid under the extractor? Their has to be enough clearance all around the base of the rim, so that it could be fed up correctly from the magazine when the slide goes forward into battery.0 -
ok -- snow, i did as u said and if i push the outside of the extractor arm in (flat to slide-- in rear of extractor) the .40 cal will fit into extractor claw. It does seem tight not bad at all.
Secondary to OP would a 4000 series slide fit on a 5 or 6 series gun?0 -
I thought .40S&W could go 9mm but it's not recomended to go the way you want. 0 -
I'd stick to the caliber that the gun came with and look into used 4006, 4013 etc., which would probably cost nearly the same as the .40 cal slide/barrel/springs/mags you need. Plus I see no reason to batter up your S&W 9mm collection with higher-recoil energy .40's. 0 -

yea i am going to, i was just more wondering than acually thinking about doing. I have played with a few 4000 series and they feel and look the same, hints why i was asking0 -
I used to have a 5906. I had it jam on me once during a critical qualification and I never trusted it again. (Ended up being a weak extractor spring) It was built like a tank, tho.
I do have a 4013 and I carried it for years as a CCW, just a bit too bulky now compared to the LC9 I now tote.0
