Winchester Mod. 1897
I'v been running into some nice Winchesters lately. Just bought a 1897 ser.#2164xx in very nice condition. Wood is very good. Action is nice and tight blueing is about 50% It has a 18 1/2" barrel. I'm told that these short barrel 1897 were popular with the Police Departments as a riot gun. The Winchester logo is on the slide and the pat. # dates on top of the barrel I'd like someone to give any info. on these guns. Thanks for the help

they are in high demand by the cowboy action shooters.Prices for a real winchesster in good shape is easily 500 bucks. The later the series,the more they are worth,I guess because they are 'newer' and prolly in better shape.
very well built guns,and with practice u can run them quite fast for action shooting.Most hold the triger back and 'slam fire' them for more speed.
some of the older ones had chambers shorter than 2 3/4",so check out that item.may say on the barrel.0 -

The partial serial number you posted tells me that it is a 1903 vintage "C" series gun.
True Riot Guns were made with a 20-inch barrel, and were marked "CYL" on the barrel.
A cut down Field grade gun is typically a $250 - $300 gun. That said, if the stocks on your gun are in good condition (no cracks in the 3-screw slide stock), they are worth $400 as piece parts.0
