Winchester pre 64 M70?
Saw a pre was 70 22 hornet. Where the serial number should is a professionally milled flat with "Lyman 985" is stamped. Anyone ever seen this.

I would question the legality (Federal) of a firearm that has had the origional serial number removed and replaced with something else. 0 -

Serial number etching may be visible on bolt. Haven't seen the number removed as you describe. Don't know the significance of Lyman 985 either. 0 -
I guess you could make up a story about it being the Lyman company sight fit testbed with their inventory number of 985 substituted for the Winchester serial number.
But a firearm of any age with altered serial number is not legal.0 -

Only if it was defaced AFTER 1968. Meaning if the firearm was built and the serial number modified before serial numbers were mandatory, then it is a legal firearm.
Although, the caveat here is better to be safe than sorry and not question, research, and validate it would be legal to purchase as is.0 -
this is a VERY old modification. bought a a gun shop in that condition pre 68 0
